Southwest Helps Needy Children Have a Merry Christmas
By JOY CHERRY Correspondent The Southwest Association of the United Nations sponsored two projects which enabled needy children to have a Christmas. The group, with the aid of Jay Luckett's TV American History class, has been collecting clothes for needy children in the area, including the Kendall Children's Home. They have received letters from 15 children at Kendall telling what they want for Christmas. The SWAUN's bought the gifts for the youngsters, who are in the six to eight year old age group.
APPEAR AT GROVE
Nine Southwest Miami Senior High students and one alumnus landed parts in the Coconut Grove production "Bye Bye Birdie." The play began Dec. 20, and will continue for two more weeks. Margo Carpenter plays a dual role as Helen and one of the sad girls; Chris Bosley, Arthur; and Harold Salve is the Harvey. Don Wright plays Don, and Deborah Romoser enacts the part of Nancy. Also in are Joanne Miller and an ex-Thespian Butch McLean. These studnets were chosen to audition by Mrs. Lou McLean.
The Christmas spirit filled the auditorium last week during the annual Christmas chorus and orchestra musical. The program consisted of solos, popular Christmas songs, carols and special arrangements. The program concluded with the "Hallelujah Chorus" by Handel at which time the audience was asked to rise. This is said to be custom established by King George II of England, who, during one of the first performances, was so moved that he rose and remained standing until the chorus finished. The chorus is under the direction of Mrs. Margaret deSola, and the orchestra is directed by Philip Fink.
EAGERS OPTIMISTIC
As the spotlight turns toward basketball, a bright future is seen for the Eagles. Dan Dougherty, Ken Schwartz, and Jeff Waxman are outstanding returnees to this years team. The coaching staff, comprised of Varsity Coach Gene Jupin and B squad Coach Marty Levin, is optimistic.
