Dangerous Bypass Crossing Involves Young Lives
(Continued from Page 1) up a traffic light at Red Road and the Palmetto by-pass killer intersection after saying it couldn't be done, right away Mrs. Glick grew impatient. That's when she decided to enlist a little backing. What the dangerous intersection needs, Mrs. Glick said, is a new pedestrian light at the SW 78th Place intersection with Coral Way. The county has promised to install a light there by moving the one located at SW 75th Ave. on the east side of the school. County officials have also promised to pave a pedestrian walk on the south side of Coral Way to link the school with areas west, and south and eliminate dangerous crossings over ramps as are necessary now. Mrs. Glick blames poor traffic engineering for the dangerous series of crossings created at the school. An expensive pedestrian overpass at SW 78th Place — costing an estimated $100,000 and similar to one constructed further south along the By-pass is the ideal solution, Mrs. Glick said. But she's willing to settle for the pedestrian light for now and a few policemen for protection while the light is being installed. With the PTA and others behind her, Mrs. Glick said she hopes to start a fire in the right place.
Fairchild Eyes Accidents
David Fairchild Elementary has underway a comprehensive bicycle safety campaign aimed at the area's climbing bike accident rate. All bicycles are scheduled to be registered today (Thursday) and tomorrow, according to Mrs. Evelyn Brooks, publicity chairman. Earlier this week, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, tests were held to test the riding skills of pupils. Tests were designed to determine the childrens' ability to brake and balance properly and to learn their understanding of safety rules and regulations.

TIMES By Robert S. Hurwitz
If words of encouragement will help, than I'd like to express to the Art Council of Miami, formal appreciation, for bringing abstract expressionist Robert Motherwell to our town. Fifty-two columns on what good this effort of bringing significant artists to speak and teach, would not be wasted. In this one column, we assure the Art Council and Clay Eldrich of the Lowe Art Gallery, that their accomplishment deserves the highest tribute from people who care. The Lowe Gallery auditorium was filled by an SRO crowd of members and guests. Clay Eldrich pulled a classic introduction by stating that Robert Motherwell needed no introduction and simply presented him without one. Motherwell, dispensed with trivia, mastered the understatement and informed us of his plan for a short speech. Given credit for helping to pioneer the controversial school of abstract expressionism, Motherwell might well be expected to stand up and fight the non-believer, defend their actions and explain their souls. No indeed, he did none of these, instead he made references to the school by heroically saying that "he hears that abstract art is debatable, but it's not debatable to me." Whatever you think of his art, you must admit that Motherwll himself is not like dumb driven cattle; he is a hero in the strife. He showed 75 color slides which he or his wife took of their studio, travel and paintings. Motherwell is sure in his own mind, that his work is pure and representative of to-day's high culture. His explanation of his slides proved that. His slides showed his work to be planned and executed with mature style. Strong lines and powerful brush attacks on the canvas are carried out with meaning and balance. By gosh, he talked like an artist, not a professor or know-it-all. Those who enjoyed the talk, appreciated his frankness and true artistic approach. Those who didn't care for his talk, were looking for a scholar and not a gentleman at work. Personally, I "dig." He reaffirmed, by not making an issue of, or defense of abstract art, that it's meaning is simple and not governed by hard to understand principals. Motherwell came across. The news created by the Art Council with this program, can go a long way to creating an informed and unafraid art colony in this area. That is if our artists are willing to learn. So you see, Miami has provided another squelch for the "this town is void of culture" critics.
