At 64, He's Last 'Untouchable' Alive

A new book, "The Last of the Untouchables," was previewed yesterday (Wednesday) by the Southwest area man who co-authored it. He is Paul Robsky, original and last member of the famous "Untouchables" of TV fame. Robsky, a local private eye for Southeastern Security Services, who lives at 7277 SW 22nd St., told about his book and his Prohibition Days experiences to members of the Greater Miami Aviation Association yesterday at the Miami Skyways Motel. The 64-year-old former federal beverage agent collaborated with United Press International columnist Oscar Fraley to pen a vivid tale of his experiences with Assistant United States Attorney General William J. Froelich and the now famous Elliot Ness in putting Al Capone behind bars. The book is a sort of sequel to the first book, "The Untouchables," and the TV dramatization which stirred the nation and caused strong reaction. As for Robsky, he got into the moonshine-busting business mostly as a result of frustration, he says. "I'm just a frustrated pilot." The frustration of reading about Lindy's historic flight as he lay in a service hospital led to his unusual career as a beverage agent when he read in the same paper the federal government needed men to crack down on bootleggers. The book deals with the sometime exciting, other times dreary experience of finding and closing down the illegal flow of alcoholic beverages. "Don't get me wrong," said Robsky. "I like to drink as well as the next guy." But Prohibition was the law approved by the people in the only Constitutional Amendment ever to be repealed, and Robsky was paid to enforce it. Could it have been enforced? "Yes" said Robsky without hesitation, but he indicated he did not think too highly of the wisdom of the law. The difficulty with Prohibition, he said, lay with police who not only refused to enforce the law, but were being paid off by organized mobs which took over the illicit business. Although repeal of the amendment pretty much curtailed illegal sales, Robsky points out, the upshot was a powerful system of organized crime which plagues us to this day.

People-to-People Has Change on Membership

The People to People Program voted 7-3 last week to change its method of processing memberships. Applicants will now be screened by an anonymous three-man committee known only to the president. Applications will be made to the president, Mrs. Lucile Neher, who will turn them over to the committee. The board of directors will make final determination. The move was opposed principally by Paul Andre, who headed the previous committee, and Ed Russo, who served on the same committee. Fred Hartnett, former Gable's mayor, argued in favor of the new setup. Membership is open to all area residents.
