COUNTY LINE

with Ed Knight THEY WERE cute lying there asleep. Well, most of them were asleep. Some were awake, crying. And others yawned, waved their arms around and went back to sleep. IT WAS THE maternity ward nursery at Doctor's Hospital and the mothers - the ones who could be up and around - the fathers and relatives like me were looking at the brand new babies through the nursery window. I HAD BECOME an uncle the day before. My sister gave birth to a nine pound plus boy - a big one by any standards - and he was lying there asleep now, his hair matted to his little head, his features pink with newness and the little blue blanket tucked tightly under his arms. NO ONE IT seems is ever angry standing there watching those little bits of life. The mothers, I believe, are the proudest, especially those young mothers who have just had their first child. THE FATHERS seem relieved, happy the baby and the mother are both healthy. The nurses are understanding and gentle. But they have been through the whole business before, many times before. And they look tired. WOMEN GREATLY outnumber men in front of the nursery window. For some reason, women see something in newborn babies that men never see. They know the reasons for the baby's crying, what each infant will look like as he or she progresses through the years and the vital statistics of each baby lying there in his crib. "HE HAS BLACK hair now, but he probably won't keep it," said one lady who was a friend of a mother and liked looking at newborn babies in maternity wards. Another lady told me my nephew probably would have different colored eyes as he got older. THE GIRL babies were distinguished by a pinkness surrounding them. The girls have pink name tags, pink blankets and pinker faces. The infant boys had blue or white name tags and blankets. Someone remarked that this might be the last time we would see so many girls sleeping in the same room with so many boys. THE NURSERY window at Doctors' is open from 3:15 to 3:30 in the afternoon and from 7:30 to 8 at night. There aren't many viewers in the afternoon. The greatest turnout is at night. This is when the fathers and the in-laws put in an appearance. "THERE'S MINE over there," one father said. "Who do you think he looks like?" said another, and "why is he crying?" said still a third father. The nurses are tolerant. THE MATERNITY ward is different from other hospital wards. There's a gayness about it, a sense of achievement by patients there with a commonness of purpose between patients and nurses. These women aren't sick, they're just having babies, the most natural task in the world.
