Kings Bay Seeks More Park Land For Golf Course
A request by Kings Bay Yacht and Country Club for additional county park land is scheduled to be heard by the County Commission March 6. The request, originally scheduled for Feb. 20 meeting, entails the lease of 24 more acres of park land for completion of the Club's 18-hole golf course. The 24 acres will bring to 72 acres the land held under lease by the Kings Bay Yacht and Country Club from the county. Kings Bay, started by developer Ben Cooper, was recently purchased by Gustave Ring, Washington, D.C. capitalist and race horse owner. Cooper ran into financial difficulty a couple of years ago and never fulfilled the contract requirements for supplying 500,000 cubic yards of fill in exchange for the lease. According to Adrian Barnes, County Park director, the details of the agreement on Kings Bay's latest request for county park land have not been negotiated. Assistant County Manager Hoke Welch indicated that a similar agreement for fill to be used for an access road to the park, is in the works. The original request was for 10 acres, but was changed to 24 acres because of the irregular boundaries it would create, Welch said. The proposed agreement, Welch said, dates back to negotiations with Cooper. It was his understanding, he said, that the county would get more fill for the additional area but Barnes could not confirm this. "There's nothing agreed to yet," Barnes said. But Barnes indicated that his recommendation at the March 6 meeting would be favorable to Kings Bay. He said the land is underwater and that the county has no plans for using it. The rest of the former Chapman Field tract has been either acquired from the Federal Government by the University of Miami, Kings Bay, or the County. The federal government still operates a plant introduction station just south of S. Howard Drive, (SW 136th St.). The county park area is immediately south of Coral Gables by the Sea subdivision. Kings Bay is approximately south of SW 144th St. Last person to seek county land for a private golf course was Sol Rovin for his Hammock Oaks subdivision in Coral Gables. Public opposition to using of 140 acres of Matheson Hammock Park land for a private golf course, ultimately defeated the project. According to Herbert Nadeau, of Anderson and Nadeau, who is handling the proposed lease transaction for Ring, the additional land is needed because of engineering mistakes in the original request which Continued on Page 2

Trash Complaints Continue to Pile Up
Readers Write, Call MAURICE LABELLE Guide Managing Editor YOU CAN so do something about trash conditions in the unincorporated areas. Guide readers, in a flood of letters and calls, had some advice on how to get rid of the thorny problem. And a few other things, as well. While the writers and callers were vociferous in their comments, only three would stand up to their opinions by identifying themselves. One woman who called to complain about no pickup of trash for several months admitted that she had not paid her bill. Several callers complained that the trash pickup men came ahead of schedule, but most complained that they were behind the appointed week. Others said they were willing to pay more than $28 a year to get weekly pick ups. County officials Monday said that complaints to them have dropped off sharply in recent months. "Complaints are about washed out," said Hoke Welch, assistant county manager. Fred Stutz, Waste Department Supervisor, confirmed Welch's statement. Stutz admitted that crews have made pickups ahead of schedule, but he said they have been instructed to go back at the scheduled time. The advance pickups result from orders to fill the trucks after regular routes are covered, Stutz said. Equipment and other difficulties have resulted in delays of several days in some in- Continued on Page 2

EDITORIAL The Guide wants to be the champion of the unincorporated dweller. Your response about poor garbage service shows the need for someone to help. But we can't do it without your help. We don't know why, but most people who wrote or called refused to give their names, even the name of their street. We can do little toward helping you get the service promised you for your money unless you're specific with the complaint. And what the heck's wrong anyway that we're afraid to sign our name to a complaint about lousy garbage collection? Call or write and sound off but please give us all the facts.
