COUNTY LINE with Ed Knight

IT HAS BEEN a week of surprises in West Dade. First there was the announcement of further construction in Coral Way Shopping Center on the southeast corner of Coral Way and Galloway Road. Following closely behind this was news of a bank planned for 84th Ave. and Bird Road in West Dade. I DON'T know how you feel, but to me this is good news. In Coral Way Shopping Center will be a Richards Department Store, a Walgreens, a Newberry's and assorted other stores. Yes, I was surprised to hear of the Richards going in there. I thought Dadeland Shopping Center, at Palmetto Expressway and North Kendall Dr. would eventually get the Richards. OUT AT 163RD ST. shopping center there are both Richard's and Burdine's. It seems natural that both big stores would go into Dadeland. Having Richard's in West Dade now will be a tremendous asset to the area. Next to Dadeland and perhaps more than Dadeland, the Coral Way-Galloway area will be the busiest business area in the South-West Dade area. THREE CORNERS of the intersection will be business locations with practically every type of business needed in any residential area. On the fourth corner is a service station, a business West Dade can well do without just now. One question remains in my mind: How long will it be before the county widens Coral Way? It has been needed for lo, these many years and now that Coral Way Shopping Center is being fully developed, it means just that many more cars on Coral Way. ONE OF THE outstanding aspects of the Coral Way-Galloway business layout is the patience and selection of the various developers in keeping the intersection from getting a honky-tonk complex. The fact that Westchester Shopping Center and Zayre's are bright, new and well-managed apparently greatly aided Richard's executives in their selection of the Coral Way Shopping Center as an outlet. IN CONTRAST to Coral Way is Bird Road, which I consider one of the worst looking streets in the entire county. It's the most honky-tonk, badly-zoned and least attractive thoroughfare in Dade and if I was a businessman I would steer clear of Bird Road. Lack of a master plan for Bird Road is partly responsible for this condition. Spot zoning is another cause. I WAS MAKING a list of businesses that West Dade badly needed the other day. Heading the list was a bank. It didn't matter what kind of bank, state or national, although national banks must go in incorporated areas. Now comes word that we're going to get a bank that should be open for business in June. Do you realize that this is the first bank west of Red Road? Do you realize how much business is waiting for this bank? ALSO NEEDED in West Dade - a movie theater (indoor) and a family restaurant, preferably a cafeteria ... As an example of how merchants push the holidays, Zayre's already has Easter baskets and candies for sale ... a possible candidate for the county commission from District 4 - Hughlan Long, who was runnerup to Walter Weiss in 1960 ... one of the prettiest drives in the area- Old Cutler Road as far south as is possible . . . Do you think this February has been a pleasant month? Maybe so, but it also has been one of the warmest and driest.
