And Now They're Working Again Those Chimes Toll--Er, Tolled The Knell of UM's Parting Day
By SANDY CALPINI Correspondent Nineteen days and $1 later the University of Miami Carillon atop the Merrick building rang out again at 11 a.m. last Thursday and Frank J. Rimoldi was happy. The arm striker which triggers the half-hour chimes struck off on Feb. 5th, and the inexpensive but vital part had to be ordered from a Chicago firm. Not a clock-watcher but a chime - listener, Rimoldi, of 1464 Urbino Ave., Coral Gables, is the donor of the carillon set. The semi-retired professor, who still does landscape designing for new buildings, came to the UM campus in 1949. The sentimental prof missed the chimes he had heard on his alma mater campus, Cornell. "The fine set of chimes in the beautiful setting of the Finger Lake region made such an impression on me that I wanted to be able to hear them again." By walking to school every day and leaving his car at home, he was able to save enough money to purchase the electrical chimes which chimed for the first time in March, 1951. Another observant listener is Bob Rimoldi, a junior majoring in industrial education and son of the professor. "We can hear the carillon from our home when the wind blows East but I have a closer and more pleasant feeling when I walk across the campus and hear them ring." Paul, another son, passed to class to the toll of his father's gift. He is now an industrial education teacher at Cutler Ridge Junior High School. While the lack of bongs inconvenienced many people who timed their lunch hours, or depended on the chimes to get them off in the morning, others did not notice that the chimes had been quieted. An informal survey taken on the University campus revealed some aspects of human nature. The Electrical Department, which oversees the care of the chimes, received many calls from persons inquiring about the silence. Tom Stephens, assistant foreman said, "When they were working people called to tell us they were too loud." However, when a gentleman in the maintenance personnel was queried why the chimes had ceased, he replied, "Of course they're working," and dialed his friend in the Electrical Department quickly to confirm his statement. "Tommy, the chimes working today? . . . Out for 19 days? (gulp) Funny I hadn't noticed." Dr. D. Harris, organ professor, was quick to notice the chimeless campus. For 10 years, Dr. Harris has played the carillon from 5 to 5:30 on Sundays. "As soon as all is prepared, we'll be back on the job," the professor assured. Jack R. Bohlen, assistant to the president in development: "They aren't? Hadn't noticed till you mentined it. That just goes to show you . . ." F.S.F. Bush, a librarian assistant: "I missed them when I went on my morning break. Something very pleasant about the chimes." Milton Alderfer, senior, commented that he had missed the occasional morning hymns, and thought it would be a good idea if they became a tradition. A cashier in the bookstore began wearing a watch because she had learned to depend upon the chimes. "Perhaps we are so deeply engrossed in our everyday problems that we are not aware of our auditory cues," blind psychologist Eve Weeks, a doctoral student, replied to the reporter's query. Now that you think about it, when did you notice the University Carillon had stopped tolling? In case you are bothered that you hadn't noticed the silence, an extra striker was purchased so that future repairs will take just a few moments, not 19 days.
