Our Readers Tell McNayr Where the Trash Is as Complaints Pour in
EDITOR: Two families at above addresses — David Schwartz, 8902 SW 17th Ter., and Stuart Rubin, 8862 SW 17th Ter., are complaining about garbage collection. On Tuesday, Feb. 27, garbage was not picked up at 8902 SW 17th Ter. At 8862, one can was emptied, the other containing grass cuttings, was left standing. Schwartz, figuring that another garbage pickup was due on Friday, March 2, didn't call the Waste Division. Friday came, but there was no pickup in this area at all. At the Rubin residence, garbage is overflowing and at Schwartz's, same thing. Therefore, David Schwartz called the Waste Division and explained the situation. They replied that they were in the process of reorganizing the dates of garbage pickup, but that our garbage would be picked up on March 3. Today two trucks were picking up trash and cuttings, but no garbage. It is now 2:30 p.m., but no one has been here to pick up the overflowing garbage at either one of the above addresses. Is that the way to "keep our neighborhood neat"? We would be very happy to cooperate in any way possible to get this problem straightened out. And by the way, our bills for garbage and waste collection are not delinquent. DAVID SCHWARTZ 8902 SW 17th Ter. CAROLE RUBIN 8862 SW 17th Ter. EDITOR: Big deal, great help, yea Metro. . . Plaster can't be picked up by the Metro trucks because it won't burn. However, the men can waste time picking out the leaves and grass, then when we have to haul it away ourselves, we will cut our hand and have a doctor bill to pay. Don't leave any containers out that you value because they will haul them away rather than empty them. Put the trash out in front of your house and leave it there for a month waiting for the truck to come, then when they take it away you will have a nice dead spot to put future trash in. We have paid the $28 but we are still having to haul our own trash. NORMA O. CLINE 8321 SW 32nd Ter. EDITOR: You ask in your editorial in The Guide received today if we like a neat neighborhood to stand up and be counted. I think we have a justified complaint in our neighborhood regarding Metro trash collection. No trash pickups have been made on our block in over six weeks. Practically every other house has a big pile in front near the street which has been waiting since the second week in January. In a previous article you suggested that we wait until a few days before the pick up date before placing trash out front. How can we do this when there is no scheduled date? Last year it was picked up anywhere from the first week of the month to the last week or not at all as in this month of February 1962. Moreover the garbage in the cans in the back are pickups lots of times on Tuesday, a day is skipped and the next pickup made on Thursday. Then garbage is allowed to pile up and run over for the next four or five days. It would seem to the writer, who has always paid his collection bill promptly by check, that we are getting very little added benefit for having our collection assessment raised more than double from $13 to $28 per year. N. C. MAXWELL 6745 SW 31st St. EDITOR: Apprepos the complaint in Feb. 22 issue about the premature trash set-outs and your inability to supply an answer on the ground that "there is no ordinance on the books to control the placement period," has it occurred to you and the Commissioners that all that has to be done is to enact the necessary ordinance? I wrote a letter to the county manager (said letter to be forwarded also to the commissioners) soon after the addition of the once a month road collection of debris, in which I predicted that unless an ordinance would be passed by the commissioners of the county prohibiting the pre mature placing of debris in the road, with a proper penalty attached thereto, debris would accumulate the very next day after the collection and be exposed to view for whole month until the next collection. The letter was ignored. If you really are sincere in your expressed desire to be of help, why don't you use your newspaper publicity efforts to draw up a petition for an ordinance? Politicians in office are immune to individual complaints but very sensitive to organized ones. I deplore the facetiousness with which you met the reasonable complaint of a most civic-minded citizen. A. M. BELFORD 6714 SW 31st St. EDITOR'S NOTE: We had no intention of being facetious about so serious and distressing a problem as neighborhood trash conditions. Our story merely points out the lack of any law with teeth in it which would help complaining residents get action from the County. It is up to the county commissioners to pass such a law — if you want it. EDITOR: The article in The Guide of Feb. 22 on trash was one of interest to me. Not only the trash service is poor but so is the garbage. Yes, we get our monthly pickup and I know when it is, however I would rather have no pickups if the pickups are only once a month. I believe that all trash should be picked up at the same time as the garbage. I don't like saving my trash in the house until the pickup date and I don't like leaving it outside to blow around until pickup time. I have no garage, so therefore, I am forced to do one of three things — 1. leave it outside; 2. leave it in the house, or; 3. cart it away myself. Since I do not like the first two choices it leaves me only the third. Therefore, I rarely take advantage of my trash pickup unless I am fortunate enough to have trash on my pickup date. At the present time I feel that the additional money I pay for trash pickup is money down the drain. As for the garbage pickup. We get that picked up twice a week. However, it's a guessing game on which day they will come. At one time it was Monday and Friday, then Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Monday and Friday, then Tuesdays and Thursdays, and today they showed up on Monday. I dislike this since it's impossible to get all your garbage out on time. If you miss them once — you have garbage for a week outside. I don't know if this letter helps change matters, but maybe if everyone took five minutes to complain a little something would be done. Mrs. Edward V. Lustig 7970 SW 13th Ter.
