36 at Palmetto Initiated into Honor Society
By EUNICE TALL Correspondent Twelve seniors and 24 juniors were installed into the Palmetto chapter of National Honor Society Feb. 22 in the auditorium in a formal candlelight ceremony. New members were rated outstanding Palmetto students by the faculty. They possess the qualities of leadership, character, scholarship and service necessary for NHS admittance. New members in the senior class are Bill Hester, Suzan Hill, Worth Kitson, Bill Knerr, Lois Mack, Jackie McLaughlin, Joyce Salisbury, Louis Sass, Norman Teahan, Lynn Ward, Sue Werner and William Wladyka. First members of the Class of '63 to be installed are: Kay Cadman, Jackie Crawford, Mike Crissey, Sue Gable, Gloria Germain, Erv Grau, Mike Jarard, Pat Jones, Elise Kass, Pat Kellogg, Peggy Knerr, Joan Kuykendall, Micki McClure, Lynne Moody. Jane Randolph, Gretchen Schmidt, Sharon Smoak, Laura Smith, Billie Stultz, Eunice Tall, Barbara Taylor, Laura Trick, Cheryle Vento and Mike Wessler. Principal Cylde Crabtree, Vice President Mrs. Shirley Newman, and Judge William A. Meadows, guest speakers, addressed the society during the induction ceremony. NHS members also spoke to the society: Tom McClary, "service"; Peter Andrus, "leadership"; and Roz Muskat, "character." * * * Palmetto's musical director Dale Willoughby, chorus, and James Barwick, band, will attend the Music Educators National Conference in Chicago March 19. In order to finance the trip, the directors participated in a Dade County music teachers' concert held Feb. 18 at Miami Beach Exhibition Hall. * * * Greg Poulas, sophomore, was elected president of the Palmetto Junior Red Cross for second semester. Other officers are Fred Belland, vice president; Pat Lehre, secretary; Jon Mooy, treasurer; and Pat. Baker, historian. * * * John Evans, senior, is the first place winner in an essay contest, "What Makes America Great," recently sponsored by the Miami Business and Professional Women's Club. Other Palmetto winners are John Stankrauff, second place; Michelle Brennan, Jackie Disspain, Mimi Klein, and Kathy Turk, honorable mentions. Winners will be the guest of the club at an awards dinner to be held March 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Miami Springs Villas. * * * Five members of the Palmetto Student Council will represent Palmetto in the District VI Student Council convention in Key West March 9 and 10. Council delegates are Peter Andrus, president; Jerry Partney, vice president, Sandy McQuinn, secretary; Dick Smith, treasurer, and Patty Hayes, junior class representative. Harold Knott, student activities director, will accom- pany these delegates to Key West. The annual junior class magazine drive ended Feb. 12 with a total sales of $4,800. Profits from the sales will help finance the Junior-Senior Prom to be held May 26. The top 10 magazine salesmen were: Bill Edelman, first; Elsie Parks, second; Billie Stultz, third; Eunice Tall, fourth; Sue Henry, fifth; Jamie Beaty, sixth; Barbara Taylor, seventh; Doug Greist, eighth; John Brown, ninth, and Barbara Brown, 10th. Bonnie Ross was the winner of a special prize, an extension telephone. Her name was picked from the highest salesmen in each homeroom. * * * The Triple Trio, a nine-girl singing ensemble, appeared on the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour March 4 on nation-wide telecast. The Trio sang "We Can Make Believe," and "Old Man River," from "Showboat." Winners will be chosen by the number of votes received from each contestant from the TV viewers. Members of the Triple Trio are Sandy Hoff, Betty Pressley, Pat Shull, Pat Kirby, Diane Conerly, Linda Kight, Jill Ford, Kathy White, and Dee Lamana.
