SW High Scores Stage Success

By JOY CHERRY Correspondent Long hours of hard work and planning went into making "The Teahouse of the August Moon" a successful performance last week. In order to make Oriental sets look authentic, a field trip by the Drama Department was taken to Watson Island where students drew sketches of the Japanese teahouse, gardens and lotus pond. Here in the true setting of the Far East the first stages of the scenery were being accomplished. Don Fletcher, a new student to Southwest from Indiana designed and worked on all the sets. A commercial artist, Don made the silk screen posters advertising the play. A goat which will be added to the humor of the play was secured by Cecile Griffin from Ephraim Newmark, a senior at Southwest.

HERE ARE THREE of the SW High students in the cast of "Teahouse of the August Moon" who helped make the play a success. From left are Douglas Gault, 1226 SW 74th Ct., who played Capt. Fisby; Joy Cherry, 7273 SW 16th Ter., Lotus Blossom; and Harold Saive, 9320 SW 41st St., Sakini.

GENE FLINN . . . Metro candidate

Gene Flinn Seeks Seat On Metro

Gene Flinn, Coral Gables insurance man and head of the movement to create a "shell city" in the unincorporated Southwest Dade area, is a candidate for the Metro Commissioner Robert M. Haverfield's seat in District 1. "We must now move Metro forward if this government is to be completely workable for all the people of Dade County," Flinn said in announcing his candidacy. Pressing needs, Flinn said, are completing completion of the expressways, rejuvenation of the downtown business areas; gaining of major industry to equalize taxes; further elimination of duplicate services and Sunday closing. "We must also turn our attention to slum clearance, a clean up of our river and canals and increased bus service to the unincorporated areas," Flinn said. The former Korean War Marine sergeant is a graduate of the University of Miami, where he majored in government. He is a Kiwanian in South Miami, was civic director for the Visiting Nurses Association, president of CITY, former Elk, and Jaycee, member of the Palmetto Presbyterian Church. Flinn, a Democrat, was cited as the "Outstanding Young Democrat for a Florida County in 1961." He came to Florida in 1947, has resided in Dade County the past five years and is a native of Dayton, Ohio. Flinn is married to the former Dorothea Dankes, of Oak Park, Ill. They have one daughter and live at 5100 SW 87th Ave.
