S. Miami Renames Petry; Jack Block Is New Judge

City Manager and Clerk C. B. Petry was given a vote of confidence by the South Miami City Council last week when he was re-appointed to the job at the Council's reorganizational meeting. George B. Hardie Jr. was also retained as city attorney. Hardie replaced Hughlan Long after Long resigned to return to private practice and continue the water rates fight with Consumers Water Company. A new face is that of former councilman Jack Block who was named city judge. Block replaces George Hollahan, state representative who had held the post for the past 10 years. Assistant judge will be attorney Robert Rutledge. Block, a University of Miami Law School graduate, fought for and obtained a library for South Miami when he served on the council between 1958-60. A native of Newark, N.J., Block has lived in Miami since 1940. He is an Army veteran of World War II and lives with his wife, the former Shirley Greenberg, and their three children at 5610 Twin Lakes Drive. He served as president of the Civic Association of South Miami. EVERGLADES PTA Bill Baggs, editor of the Miami Daily News, will speak next Tuesday on "Can We Preserve the Peace?" to the PTA of Everglades Elementary School in the cafetorium at 8 p.m. The program is open to the public. A question and answer period will follow Baggs' talk.
