LOOKING FORWARD to a successful season at the Gallery Playhouse in Coral Gables are, front to back, business manager, Lew Entin; technical director, Bob Campbell; director, Sid Casell. The Gallery Playhouse, as the name indicates, has a decor like that of an art gallery. Paintings of local artists line the walls, lending the Playhouse both the touch of an art gallery and a little theatre.
Gallery Playhouse Will Promote Original Plays
By CAROL ANN YOUNG "The Gallery Playhouse plans to present original works and off-Broadway successes as well as standard drama and comedy," said Sid Casell, director of the newly-organized theater, 211 Giralda Ave. The Gallery's first production, "Third Best Sport," has been playing to turn-away audiences since Oct. 26. Casell attributes this initial success to the theater's location, selected on the basis of support in the Coral Gables area for his past theatrical ventures. 200 Plays Active in Miami theater for 30 years, Casell has produced and directed over 200 plays. Bob Campbell, Gallery technical director, has worked with Casell for the past five years. Lou Entin, business manager, rounds out the threesome. Entin became interested in the theater when his son won the drama award for two consecutive years at Bowdoin College. Mark Phillips serves as stage manager and Vera Campbell handles make-up. A civic project, the Gallery employs the talent of local semi-professional actors. It will operate on a year-round schedule, presenting about eight plays in a season. The Gallery building itself is a remodeled dance studio. "We built the stage and scenery ourselves," Casell added. The theater is air conditioned and has a seating capacity of 100. Campbell installed a communications system from the control room to the off-stage area to give a smoother performance of the sound effects. Local Artists The Gallery also has facilities to display paintings of local artists. A mural, "Story of the Theater," by Bob Eliot, extends across the rear of the auditorium. In addition to the regular theater fare, Mrs. Ester Brezo, former drama instructor at the University of Miami, conducts dramatic classes for children with regular productions at the Gallery. Casell hopes to "develop the Gallery into a cultural center which will give a chance to the creative talents of the various arts." "Our third production," he said, "will be a musical, 'Once Upon an Orbit,' written by Joyce C. Reid, Gables woman who won first place in a state song writing contest."

Ah, Youth!
A Southwest section woman was stopped by a Coral Gables policeman for speeding recently. Officer Lamar Gilbert weathered the storm as she accused him of picking on all the young girls in the area. Her driver's license indicated she was 56. Despite her youth, Gilbert ticketed her anyway. But she was found not guilty in Metro Court Nov. 23.
