Dateline: Southwest High Marilyn Johnson Reigns As Senior Homecoming Queen
By LAURA HENRY Marilyn Johnson, attractive senior, was selected Homecoming Queen and was revealed Tuesday evening at the coronation ceremony. The senior court consisted of Sandy Wallace, Nancy Riggs, Linda Elliott and Bonnie Barrett. Marilyn reigned over all the Homecoming festivities and was guest of honor at the Homecoming dance. Dr. Lee A. Aber opened the ceremonies, crowned the queen and presented the court. Princesses from the junior class were Sandy Marchinsky, Patsy Doyle, Joy Justice and Julie Heisser, Sophomores were Judy Peeples, Mary Chapman, Pamela Goodman and Jerri Knight. Southwest held its annual Homecoming Parade last Wednesday afternoon. The parade route went through South Miami and Coral Gables business districts. Marching bands from four neighboring junior high schools participated in the parade along with Southwest's Royal Lancer Band. The participating bands were from West Miami Junior High, South Miami Junior High, Riviera Junior High and Rockaway Junior High. Floats and cars of every size and shape were entered by various clubs and homerooms. A specially decorated float carried the Homecoming Queen and her attendants. The Homecoming formal in the Skyline Room of the Du Pont Plaza held many wonderful memories for all. Romaine Fitzpatrick, last year's queen, crowned Marilyn Johnson Homecoming Queen, 1960-61. Alfred Taylor Week Nov. 21-24 was proclaimed "Alfred Taylor Week" in honor of the popular faculty member. Money for a lasting memorial to this great man was collected last Wednesday. The traditional Senior Dress-Up Day was observed by the seniors last Friday. The Senior Board planned it as one of the many activities for the Senior Class this year. Musical talents were recognized by members of Modern Music Masters, the National Music Honor Society. The new pledges are Carol Beckham, Elaine Benaine, Gwen Gochran, Carolyn Coleman, Judy Eberly, Billy Griffith, Sharon Hugel, Carol Mark, Bruce Matza, John Morrison, Jerry Oberly, Nancy Riggs and Eileen Rittenhouse. Approximately 600 students from South Florida are invited to attend the annual Regional Thespian Conference at Southwest High on Dec. 2 and 3. Students will benefit from workshops on acting, theatrical techniques and dance drama. Critics from the University of Miami and Barry College will be on hand to evaluate and to determine awards to be given to the best actor and actress, and best supporting actor and actress. Ten members of the Debate Club participated in a practice debate with Coral Gables High. The topic was: "Resolved That the United Nations Should Be Significantly Strengthened." The contest was a draw. Speakers from Southwest were: Ephraim Newmark, Zalmon Newmar, Gene Odell, Larry Puis, Manuel Lopez, Richard Williams, Robert Kaplan, Richard Siegel, Bobby Kotch and Charles Mirman. The Southwest chapter of the Future Teachers of America spent the day observing teaching techniques at David Fairchild Elementary School, Nov. 10. FTA members who observed were: Karen Alderson, Anita Barber, Selaine Beniane, Geri Blohm, Anita Constant, Joyce Dew, Rhea Goldman, Bernadette Gressett, Linda Halpern, Judy Lebar, Vicki Lebar, Joseph LeSage, Joanne Lincoln, Francine Newman. Others included Linda Perry, Sandra Peyser, Susan Schlein, Sunny Walker, Howard Watson, Sandra Wright, Blythe Bonabel, Georgette Greenberg, Deirdre Kames, Barbara Fisk, Rosalind Yagman and Margaret Lasher. Southwest's first annual banquet was held Nov. 15 at the Coral Gables Country Club with a majority of seniors and many faculty guests in attendance. Senior class president Wayne Wever was master of ceremonies at the event which featured entertainment by Jack Murphy in the form of pantomimes to "What It Was Was Football" and "Dragon Net." The banquet began with an invocation by Bill Griffith. Awards were given by senior homerooms to their members. Six Eagle Scouts from Southwest were among the 160 from South Florida region who were honored Oct. 31 at a recognition dinner at the DuPont Plaza. Those attending from Southwest were: Kenneth Golder, Alvin Plaskoff, Ronnie McGlade, Richard Meacham, Richard Newton and Don Barber. Original Essays Submitted Original 150 word essays by 28 students have been forwarded to the National High School Poetry Association to be considered for publication in the National High School Essay Anthology. Students whose essays were selected by the faculty committee include: Janet Bieble, Elaine Schaefer, Howard Hayden, Sherre Colvin, Eilene Apple, Robin Mason, Ruth Schildkraut, Carole Lustgarten, Charles Mirman, Sharon Campbell, James Dean and Diane Davis. Others were: Linda Sue Nunery, Michael Flynt, Lynne Rienner, Gene Beckwith, Dinda Sue Prusoff, Marty Ketcham, Adrianne Schwartz, Vicki Lebar, Joanne Glass, Francine Newman, Kathy Russe, Rose Ann Halas, Cherly Hankins, Noel Nation and Joel Landsman.
