Lourdes Academy welcomes freshmen

Lourdes Academy will open its annual Welcome Week with Blue and White Day, Sept. 20. Activities for Monday will include a special liturgy offered by Rev. James F. Fetscher, Field Day activities, and Staff Appreciation Day. Highlighting the week's events will be the official welcome of the Class of 1980 on Friday, Sept. 24. At an original Beanie Skit, 196 freshmen will receive the traditional green and white beanie which they must wear for a week. A "Welcome Dance" Friday evening, which will close the week will also launch the 1967-77 social activities at Lourdes. School board The Dade School Board will meet Wednesday, Sept. 22, starting with a conference session at 10 a.m. to be followed by the regular meeting at 1 p.m. Topics scheduled for discussion at the morning conference session are the proposed revisions to the rules concerning school attendance and corporal punishment. School officials are proposing the attendance rule be changed to place more emphasis on notifying the parents of students' absences and to provide students with make-up work regardless of whether an absence is excused or unexcused. Under the proposed revision on corporal punishment, teachers would have the right to paddle students providing the principal has approved the use of paddling as a disciplinary measure in his school.
