She's whiz with words

Joyce Brogdon and her husband William, have been working crossword puzzles for years, but never considered entering them in a contest until a couple of weeks ago. "They're a good exercise for the mind," Joyce said, "especially when you are a word buff." She is a graduate student in English at the University of Miami. All that practice has made puzzle-solving come easy, "The puzzles in other papers are a lot harder, I think," she said of The Times-Guide weekly word problem. Mrs. Brogdon, her husband and son Douglas, 8, of 8361 SW 153rd St., have been living in Miami for about a year. Brogdon is a Coast Guard officer and was previously stationed in Brownesville, Texas. But the Brogdon's are getting used to Miami. In fact, Joyce said, "We love the climate and the people here." Mrs. Brogdon As for the $25 prize, Mrs. Brogdon is going to give part of it right back to the Times-Guide. "I think I'll take out a subscription," she said. "That's only right." With the rest, she wants to surprise her husband by picking up the tab next time they go out to dinner. Mrs. Brogdon added that she and her husband are starting to teach Douglas the art of solving crossword puzzles. If he gets as good as his parents, he may be a future Times-Guide winner.
