Horse lovers ride at Ponce Jr. High

Bob Peeples, physical education coach at Ponce de Leon Junior High, is a horse-lover. So much so, in fact, that last year he started an equestrian club at the school. By year's end about 25 people — both students and teachers — had become members. His idea then spread to Rockway Junior High, and faculty members there also started an equestrian club. And the two clubs have become so organized that they staged an equestrian competition this week. Peeples, hoping to increase the club's membership this year to at least 35 members, staged an equestrian demonstration on the school's physical education field Friday, Sept. 17. The stable of horses and riders — students from southwest area schools — demonstrated the fine techniques of riding in a series of six workshops timed to coincide with the days's schedule of physical education classes. Most students in the equestrian club don't own their own horses, but once or twice a week they go to a South Dade stable for a club meeting and a riding lesson — all for a mere $5. "My club reaches more students than a basketball game, and costs about the same as a bowling league," Peeples said.
