New YMCA opens Monday in South Dade
By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer. Put an old McArthur Dairy office building in the hands of a few imaginative South Dade citizens, and what have you got? Voila! A YMCA building. Located at 16625 S. Dixie Hwy., the new YMCA building will open officially on Monday, Jan. 3 at 9 a.m., but a New Year's party will be held Friday, Dec. 31 from 3 to 5 p.m. It is the only YMCA in Dade County south of Kendall Drive. "We also have nine acres of land which McArthur Dairy conveyed to us," says YMCA Director Doug McGaughey. "We have a large garage which we will convert into a gymnasium and two acres of asphalt that we can use for basketball courts and maybe tennis courts, later." Until then, the building has club meeting rooms for its members and plans to add a game room. "We will soon begin classes in yoga and arts and crafts as well as other skills," McGaughey says. "We may start a summer camp on the land and we want to develop an after school program for families whose parents work.4 "This has been the dream of our board chairmen, Philip C. Pauze, and Edgar Jones, Jr. We have been working on this for three years and have had the programs but no building," McGaughey added. Youth membership will be $15 per year, and family membership will be about $50 a year, McGaughey said.
