South Dade girls steal show at track meet

A group of South Dade girls stole the show and the affection of the spectators at the Fifth Annual Hollywood Holiday Track Classic, held Saturday. Dec. 18 at South Broward High School. In the hurdles event, the crowd was treated to a near upset as Gaye Dell, the Australian Olympic Team's premier hurdler, was pressed the limit by Bernadette Grant, the defending Florida State High School Champion from South Dade High. Miss Grant had rallied from a poor start to pass Miss Dell by the midpoint of the race. She banged her knee going over a hurdle and was thrown off stride just enough to lose by a single step. "I'm certain she would have won if she hadn't hit that hurdle," Miss Dell said after the race, "and I promised her that we'd meet and have another go at it in Moscow in the 1980 Olympics." Southwest Track Club runners won two of three long jump competitions. plus the women's discus and the Youth shot put. They also took 10 second place medals to easily lead all girls' teams in scoring. Sisters Wanda and Eunice Ashford of Southwest Track Club brought the crowd to its feet with victories in the sprint events. Eunice captured the Youth Division 100 yard dash with a time of 11.5 seconds. She finished the race eight yards ahead of the field. The 440-yard relays provided the day's biggest excitement with Southwest Track Club again sweeping all age groups.
