Their home livable and in good taste

By DOROTHY STEIN Staff Writer "Most people choose a painting to match the decor," says Leslie Cohen, "but we chose the decor to match a painting." Actually, she admits, it was only the family room and its adjoining kitchen and hallway that were designed to complement a favorite painting... but the unorthodox procedure, Leslie and Harvey both agree, was definitely in character. The eight-by-two-foot oil, painted by a former neighbor, was the only thing the Cohens brought with them to their new Sunset Park home five years ago, and its tropical lemon-lime colors were the jumping-off point for this part of the house. "Livable" and "usable" are how Leslie and Harvey describe their home, but while they chose their furnishings for practicality, nowhere did they compromise on sophistication or good taste. The sleek living-dining room, in soft beige and shades of brown, looks as if it were decorator-designed, yet Leslie insists that she did the entire room in about 15 minutes. She says she knew how she wanted it to look. "So once I saw the furniture and fabrics that I liked, there was no point in wasting any more time," she added. Three pieces of furniture in the room, however, were not picked out impulsively; the coffee table, wall unit and dining room table were custom-crafted to Leslie's own designs. Copper is the secret ingredient in these unique pieces, and its warm sheen gives a feeling of richness to the room. The dining room table is a simple construction of two "U"-shaped hammered-copper bases, supporting a large sheet of glass. Its corners are rounded to match the curves of the "U's". The coffee table is a large "floating" slab, indirectly illuminated from underneath. Its facade consists of numerous pieces of copper in different finishes, welded together to form an entire surface, which is covered with a clear acrylic resin, making it practical as well as beautiful. The four compartments of the cantilevered wall unit, which appear to be precariously balanced on the shelves with no means of support other than gravity, are also covered in this resin-on-copper surface. Other unusual features in this room are the vertical blinds, which were completely macramed in a parquet design by a talented neighbor. In a corner of the livingroom is a chrome-and-leather "Barcelona" chair, one of the classics of contemporary furniture design. "In general," says Leslie, "I don't like the cold look of chrome, but I love the simple, understated lines of this chair." The only furniture in the master bedroom is a free-floating platform bed, also illuminated at the base, and its built-in headboard / nightstand stoarage area. A mirrored wall behind the bed gives the room a feeling of spaciousness.
