Moving around doesn't get minister down

By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer The thought of holding one kind of job for 29 years might bore another person to tears, but it only makes Dr. William Kalaf more enthusiastic. Now senior minister at the First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables, Kalaf thoroughly enjoys his work and finds himself very busy getting to know everyone in his 4,000 member parish. He formerly preached in Tampa, Jacksonville, and St. Petersburg. Dr. Kalaf first arrived in June. He was appointed to Coral Gables when Rev. David Scoates left the church for New York. Dr. Kalaf was at first reluctant to leave Tampa, "but when you are committed to the itinerant ways of a Methodist Minister you look forward to moving." Kalaf considers the pulpit the most important aspect of his job. "It is tremendously important, that is the way I am involved with the largest number of people." Each morning is spent studying and preparing for the Sunday sermon. In addition to preaching, Dr. Kalaf handles the administrative work of the church, does counseling, weddings, and visits hospitals and invalids. So he hasn't had much time lately for his favorite hobbies: music and the theater. "I've always lived in cities and really like the things they have to offer. This city has some of the best theatre and a good symphony." He also likes to grow flowers. In his other cities, Tampa, St. Petersburg and Jacksonville, he managed to find time to get involved in a wide range of community activities, from mental health to the United Fund to music associations to YWCA. "But I have to be careful not to get too involved right away, I have a lot of things to do this first year here," he added. So far he has joined only the Biscayne Home Board and has no immediate plans to widen his horizons. Dr. Kalaf lives with his wife, Jaynie, and has three children, Lisa, 19, who attends college in Atlanta, John, 17 and Peter, 16, both of whom attend Coral Gables High School. " . . . when you are committed to the itinerant ways of a Methodist Minister, you look forward to moving." Dr. William Kalaf
