She watched a city grow from City Hall
By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer She came to Coral Gables when the city was born and stayed for 51 years. After devoting more than a half a century to the city, Miss Loretta Sheehy is retiring from the position of city clerk, which she has held since 1959. Miss Sheehy came down to the Gables in 1925 to visit a sister who worked at the Biltmore Hotel. Her sister left the city, but Miss Sheehy decided to stay. Her first job with Coral Gables was as a secretary to F. W. Webster, one of George Merrick's vice presidents. Following that job, Miss Sheehy worked for the city's first city manager, Robert Davidson, and was secretary to every city manager after Davidson until she became deputy city clerk in 1950. Nine years later she was promoted to city clerk. Because of the extensive legal work involved in Loretta Sheehy ...devoted 50 years to city her job, she took two years of law at the University of Miami to prepare herself for that position. Miss Sheehy, who is leaving the city 20 years after she was entitled to retire, plans to travel extensively in the future.
When he came, Coral Gables was deadbroke
By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer Kenneth H. Allyn is retiring to Algeria - 811 Algeria Ave., Coral Gables that is. After 43 years of service to Coral Gables, the finance director is giving up the city's books and figures to devote more time to several religious organizations. "It feels a little strange, and it will probably feel stranger on Monday morning when I don't come in at all," said Allyn on Friday, Dec. 30 - his last day at the job. When he came to Coral Gables in 1935 the city was broke. Allyn was hired as a bookkeeper for $80 a month to help reassess property. The job, which was supposed to have been a temporary one, turned out to be more like a lifetime. "I'm happy that I'm leaving the city when it is in about the best financial condition of any city in the country," says Allyn. "Unlike most cities which were in good shape when they started and are now broke, Coral Gables started out broke and is now in pretty good shape." Within six months after Allyn arrived in Coral Gables, he was made head bookkeeper. Two years later he married his boss' secretary Mabel Walsh. By 1941, he operated a one-man purchasing department. Kenneth H. Allyn ...with Gables since 1935 "Those years when I was purchasing agent were good. The satisfaction of working with my head but also using my hands was very rewarding," he says. In 1945, he became chief accountant under his old boss George Shaw. He held that position until he became assistant finance director under L. W. Robinson Jr., in 1954. Five years later he was named finance director, a position he has held for 17 years. "It has all been good and I wouldn't change any of it," Allyn says.
