Gables police arrest FBI fugitive
Three Coral Gables police officers started the New Year with the apprehension of a federal fugitive wanted by the FBI on seven counts of grand larceny and one count of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Det. Sgt. Harry Purcell, of the Coral Gables Vice, Intelligence and Narcotics Unit was on his way to a weekend fishing trip with his family when he spotted Michael Albert De DiLorenzo, 29, in his yellow sportscar. "I had three dozen rotting shrimp in my car and several pounds of ice pouring out the door by the time we finished with the arrest," said Purcell. The officer followed the fugitive for several miles through the southwest area of the city, until DiLorenzo pulled into a SW Eighth Street motel. At that time, Purcell attempted to contact the police department from a phone across the street from the motel. The phone was broken so the officer stopped a Yellow Cab in the middle of traffic and used the mobile radio to request assistance. Officers D. Cooper and R. Buchanan arrived on the scene and arrested DiLorenzo, who was taken to Dade County Jail.
