Important new gifts make museum scene still brighter
"The museum business is never static," Dr. Arnold Lehman, director of the Metropolitan Museum and Art Center has said. And of course, this has never been truer than at the present time as the Metropolitan as well as the University of Miami's Lowe Art Museum continue to acquire new gifts and exhibits of major importance. A major exhibition of antique silver objects from Argentina is now at the Metropolitan Museum and is a contribution to the American Bicentennial from the government of Argentina. Silverwork from Rio De La Plata, Argentina, has been organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and is touring six museums in the United States with support from the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration. The exhibition is rich in religious and secular objects. Liturgical pieces of elaborate design such as bible stands, incensors, a tabernacle, chrismal containers and a large gold-plated monstrance are included. This exhibit is open to the public from 10 a.m., to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. But hurry, this exhibit will close on Jan. 16. Also on display and continuing through Feb. 2, is an exhibition of icons from the Orthodox Church Museum of Finland, 35, 18th and 19th century examples of the religious art of Finland. And at the Lowe, a bronze by American artist Frederic Remington, "The Bronco Buster," has been donated by an anonymous local donor. "The Bronco Buster" was the first bronze Remington cast and was copyrighted Oct. 19, 1885. The work given to the Lowe was cast at the Roman Bronze Works in New York (c. 1900-10). Paul Thompson, assistant director of the Lowe, says in addition to the gift, the donor is loaning a number of additional works to the museum. They include a painting by 18th century Dutch master Phillip Wouwerman, two 19th century European paintings by August Wilhelm Leu and J. M. Starkenborgh. University of Miami history professor Dr. Raymond G. O'Conner has given the Lowe an ancient Chinese bronze wine vessel called a "ku" from the Shang Dynasty (c. 1200 B.C.). The cast bronze cup is 10.6 inches high and has a flared foot that includes t'ao and t'ieh masks with slender blades extending on the surface of the piece to a flared circular lip.
A recent gift to the Metropolitan Museum and Art Center is this 1968 sculpture by Escobar Marisol. Tentative plans are to place it in the courtyard at the Biltmore.
