Late sleep on Sunday has its toll
Got the Monday morning blues? Then quit sleeping late on Sunday morning. That's the advice of sleep experts based on psychological research at the University of Florida. "The person who sleeps late on Sunday morning probably doesn't stay awake as long as he does on other days," the exper[t]s say. "Then he has tro[ub]le falling asleep on Sun[d]ay night, sleeps poo[rl]y, and wakes up feeling rotten on Monday morning." This follows a psychological fact that the less time you are awake, the harder it is to get to sleep. The body generally adheres to a schedule of eight hours of sleep and 16 hours of wakefulness. Let's say you normally wake up at 7 a.m. on weekdays and go to bed at 11 p.m. But on Sunday you give yourself a treat by sleeping until 10 a.m. That means your body probably won't feel like sleeping again until 2 a.m. The remedy? Get up at your regular time on weekends, even though you may feel like taking an extra 40 winks. If Monday is going to be a big day, get up even earlier on Sunday so you'll be ready for sleep on Sunday night. The experts also suggest that you have a comfortable mattress, which offers surface comfort plus firm inner support. That way, whether you sleep early or late, you'll have the comfort and firmness you need for a good night's sleep.
