Orientation classes scheduled Students to monitor emergency CB channel
High school juniors and seniors will have a chance to monitor emergency CB channel nine and relay messages to the Public Safety Department through a new program scheduled to start in January. A part of the Youth Focus on Government Internship Program, the new project will sponsor classes in late January to orient students on radio procedures, call screening and on-the-scene observation. Students enrolled in the course will also receive special written materials on the county government. The course will be taught in two sessions, three hours each and will prepare the students to listen to the emergency channel, extract information from motorists in trouble, accident or disaster victims and relay the information to the police or fire rescue departments. Prospective students must have completed at least one course in social studies or government and must sign up through their social studies teachers before Jan. 14. All radio monitoring will be done after school and participants must have access to a licensed base station or transceiving mobile unit at least five hours per week during one school term. The time spent monitoring will have to be documented by an adult. Although monitors will be trained to help people in trouble by relaying the distress messages to the proper county agency, they will not provide medical and police-type assistance themselves. Many area high schools offer academic credit for Youth Focus study time. Students interested in participating in the new program should contact their social studies teachers. Other internships opportunities are also available through Youth Focus for the term which begins in April.
