Union files charges against local club
From Page 1 ment for a contract for the employes," Barrera said. "But the Country Club management has refused to recognize the union and refused to bargain in good faith for a contract," he added. Robert L. Grassi, the manager of the club, would not talk about the situation. "My comment is no comment," Grassi said at the sparsely-manned club Thursday evening. Calls to the attorneys representing the country club were not returned. During the walkout Thursday evening, the clerks from the bookkeeping department were doubling as waitresses and hostesses. Lazaro Rodriguez, a waiter at the club for the past 15 years, and Orlando Rodriguez, the bar boy, were fired late Wednesday night after they had finished their day's work. The strikers said the men were fired because of their involvement with the union. "After 15 years as a waiter they(management) tell me that my work is poor," said Lazaro Rodriguez. "They had no official complaints to show me, they just said my work was poor." According to Rodriguez, he finished work on Wednesday evening and went home. At 10 p.m. he received a call from Grassi telling him to go back to the club. When he returned, Grassi fired him. Another related incident which helped spark the strike was the fact that two full-time employes were reduced to part-time—one after 10 years of service to the club. The Motel Motel Restaurant and High Rise Employees-AFL-CIO is filing charges of unfair labor practices before the National Labor Relations Board on behalf of the fired employes.
SM council to decide on library
By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer The South Miami City Council, at its 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, meeting, is expected to clear away the final obstacle blocking the construction of a new Metro library for the 6100 block of Sunset Drive. The council is expected to pass on final reading of an ordinance granting Metro variances in front, side and rear setbacks, which will virtually assure the county that it can seek bids next month for the one-story building planned to the east of South Miami city hall. In other business Tuesday night, the council will consider: • Third and final reading of an ordinance creating a retirement trust fund for the city's police officers.
