Cavalier cagers catch loss against Stingers
By STEVE DAVIDSON Gables High Correspondent For the first time this year, the Coral Gables High athletic program suffered as both the basketball and wrestling teams went down in defeat. After streaking to four straight wins, the basketball team has hit hard times. They have dropped their last six games to plummet to a 4-6 record. Last week they lost to both the Miami Beach Hi-Tides and the Miami High Stingers. The Cavs lost to Beach 53-49 as they fell behind early, and could never quite recover. Nate Bradley paced the attack with 13 points, and Ron McGhaee added 11. Gables was thoroughly beaten by undefeated and fifth ranked in the state Miami High 66-45. From the opening tip off the game was never close as the Stings held Gables under 50 points for the third straight game. The wrestling team raised its record to 4-1 by beating LaSalle, but then lost to undefeated and defending state champion Palmetto. The Cavs had an easy time in defeating LaSalle 42-17 behind pins by Alex Audain, Andy Harrison, and Paul Rooney. but against the Palmetto Panthers, it was another story. The Cavs were beaten 33-15 as the Panthers held, at one time, an insurmountable lead of 29-0. The soccer team continued to win behind the goals of Howard Senior and Mark Parrish. They defeated Miami Springs 2-0 to raise their record to 4-0, and have a strong hold on first place in the district. The girls' basketball team evened its record at 21-1 by beating Miami High 51-31. Sandra Wells led the team with a season high 19 points.
