Lice plague students in many South Dade elementary schools
By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer Despite a number of reported cases of head lice in the South Dade area schools, the small wingless parasites have stayed out of the hairs of Coral Gables students. According to Leah Vann, head of the Public Health Nursing Section in Dade County, there have been no cases of head lice reported in any of the Gables schools. There have been numerous cases reported in South Dade schools however, including Greendale, Blue Lakes, Sunset, Redland, Richmond and Naranja elementaries schools. "If we could only get parents to look out for it and not be ashamed when their children have it, we would be in good shape," said Glenn Thomas, South Dade area director of elementary schools. "It has nothing to do with cleanliness and affects people of all socioeconomic levels," he said. According to Thomas there have been epidemics in several south area schools and numerous children have been sent home until the lice have been removed from their heads. In December there were 165 cases reported throughout area schools, almost the same identical number reported in December of 1975. "The problem is no bigger this year than it was last year," said Herman Rothstein, director of Health and Physical Education for Dade County Schools. "It has been an extensive problem for the past three years and there appears to be no scientific explanation for its increased intensity," he added. After checking the entire 350 students in the school, 30 Greendale Elementary School children were sent home with head lice last month. Sunset Park, 10235 SW 84th St., had six cases in the entire school. "Actually, there is head lice in the community, and not the schools. Many children who went away to summer camp came back loaded with them," said Mrs. Vann. "Many parents put the blame on the schools, when it is not the schools fault. The schools are just caught in the middle since it's the place where kids gather and spend a great deal of time," she said. Nevertheless, the Health Department has instructed the schools to check for it routinely. Since the problem is not isolated to children, parents should check their own heads and those of other children in the home. The louse eggs can survive only at the base of the scalp, so parents are advised to check behind the ear and nape of the neck for nits. One of the reasons why head lice seem to spread in the elementary schools is because during the winter months children pile their coats and sweaters and are more apt to share hats. "If there is one child that has head lice and the lice have gotten on his coat or sweater, they can easily crawl to other coats," said Vann. The lice have to be back on the head within 48 hours if they are to survive.
Shooting victim remains in critical condition
A South Dade teenager, accidentally shot while in a liquor store Saturday night, is still in critical condition at South Miami Hospital. Karen Lazaro, 18, of 9431 SW 61st St., was accidentally shot at Rollo's Lounge and Liquor Store, 9100 S. Dixie Hwy., at 8:42 p.m. Saturday, when a rifle owned by Carman Rollo accidentally discharged. Karen was shot in the upper area of her right thigh. Although she is still on the critical list, Karen's condition has stabilized, the spokesman added. According to police, Karen and a friend, Joseph Kalil, were inside the liquor store and lounge talking to Rollo, who was working behind the sales counter, when the accident occurred. During a conversation with Kalil, Rollo pulled out a 30.06 rifle from under the counter to show him what he kept in the store for protection, police said. When Rollo put the rifle underneat the counter, the rifle accidentally discharged, critically injuring Karen, according to police. Karen is the sister-in-law of Coral Gables Police Officer Robert Murrhee. Fellow Gables officers have donated blood at the John Elliott Blood Bank for the young woman.
