Perrine Garden Club to plant trees for Arbor Day
To celebrate Florida's Arbor Day, Friday, Jan. 21, the Perrine Garden Club will plant two mahogany trees at the Dade Correctional Institute, 38400 SW 192nd Ave., Florida City. The club will also distribute tree seedlings at the Perrine Elementary School, 9895 SW 184th St.
Outstanding woman
All South Dade women's clubs are invited to enter a candidate in the 23rd Annual Outstanding Young Woman of the Year Award Luncheon-Fashion Show. The show is sponsored by the Northeast Miami Junior Woman's Club and will be held at the Four Ambassadors Hotel on March 5. Any organized woman's group is eligible to enter a candidate between the ages of 18 and 40. An award is given on the basis of leadership, achievement and service. Deadline for nominating candidates is Feb. 1. For more information, contact Mrs. Maim, 945-2601.
DeMolay installs officers
The public installation of officers of Greater Miami Chapter Order of DeMolay on Jan. 15 at Coral Gables Lodge, was attended by more than 180 parents and friends. The installation was followed by a dinner and dance. Nasser Atala is the new Master Councilor. Other elective officers include Tom LVacayo, Senior Councilor, and Scott Young, Junior Councilor. Those taking part in the installat on ceremony included rank Alvarez Jr. as installing officer; Tim Ivy as Senior Councilor; Bob Delkorte as Junior Councilor; Carl Rongo as Senior Deacon; Steve Militare as Chaplain; and Mike Alexander as Marshall. Taking part in the installation of the Advisory Council were Lawrence Hunt, Executive Officer of Florida, and Joseph Roberts, active member of DeMolay's international governing body. Chapter advisor, and also Worshipful Master of Coral Gables Lodge, Bernard Silva, made the presentation of awards. Those receiving merit bars were Nasser Atala, Tom Lacayo, Steve Militare, David Macleod, and Scott Young. Atala received the "DeMolay of Year Award" from the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons. Chapter sweethearts Janice Coplaw, Lisa Covaletske, and Susan Sawyer were introduced afterwards. Other officers taking part in the installation included Ari Boutselis, Richard Campbell, Christ Covaletske, Mike Garcia, Scott Harris, Steve Johnston, David Love, Bill Miller, Tony Palmer, Tim Siegler, Robert Termine, Logan Turrentine, and Keith Weyrik. Greater Miami Chapter meets every Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Coral Gables Lodge: 41 Valencia Ave.
Commission funds close-up
The Coral Gables City Commission approved a request by Coral Gables Senior High School for $1,000 to help support students who want to participate in the Close-up program. By participating in the program, students will go to Washington, D.C. and see exactly how the federal government works. About 15 of the 40 Gables students who want to attend have not been able to come up with the necessary money for the trip.
Heart attack
The Dade County Federation of Women's Clubs will meet Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. at the Clubhouse of the Miami Woman's Club, 1737 N. Bayshore Dr. The program, under the direction of Mrs. Charles Kreuger, will be in keeping with February Heart Month. Chief Arthur Corlanzzall, of the Miami rescue division, will speak on "What to Do Until Help Comes" and a demon-stration will be given by one of his squadrons.
Landscaping talk
St. Timothy's Garden Club invites all interested persons to its monthly meeting Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. in McDermoth Hall, in back of St. Timothy's Church, 5400 SW 102nd Ave. Dave Cooper will speak about landscaping.
Choral performance
The Choral Ensemble of Coral Gables High School, under the direction of Ms. Juanita Rafield, will perform at the South Miami Music Club, Thursday, Jan. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the University Christian Church, 6750 Sunset Dr. Ms. James McMonagle will be chairman of the day.
Utility rates
"Why We Pay What We Pay," a program on utility rate structure with information on the functions of the Public Service Commission and the Dade Water and Sewer Board, will be the main topic of the January unit meetings of the League of Women Voters. The public is welcome to attend any of the meetings. The league will meet Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 9 a.m. at 8425 SW 152nd St.; Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at 1801 Ferdinand St. and 5763 SW 65th Ave., at 7:30 p.m.; and Thursday, Jan. 27 at 1830 Opechee Dr., and 7725 SW 138th Terr., both at 9:30 a.m.
Asthma auction
Bob Weaver, well-known South Florida television weatherman, will be auctioneer at the annual charity auction to benefit the National Asthma Center in Denver, Saturday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. The auction, which will feature new merchandise donated by area merchants, will be held at the South Miami Elk's Club, SW 63rd Avenue and S. Dixie Highway. Admission is $1 per person and refreshments will be served. Tickets will be available at the door or by calling Ellen Hershfeld, 264-6581.
Pen Women
"Short Story Openings" will be discussed at a meeting of the Greater Miami Branch, National League of American Pen Women, Friday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1770 Brickell Ave. Mabel Meadows Staats, teacher of creative writing for 20 years in Dade County, has conducted workshops over the United States for the National Council of Teachers of English. Women interested in attending the meeting of professional writers may call 661-6440 for information.
