Pupils proclaim special day to honor their new principal

By DOROTHY STEIN Staff Writer School children celebrate all sorts of special days to honor famous people, so the students of Sunset Park Elementary School decided to hold a special "day" in honor of their own very special person. Tuesday, Jan. 18, was designated as "June Thorpe Day" at Sunset Park, which is located at 10235 SW 84 St. Mrs. Thorpe, who has been the school's assistant principal since its doors opened six years ago, has recently been appointed interim principal, and the students deemed this an appropriate opportunity to tell her how they felt about her. How do they feel about her? "She's tops," says Melissa Offen, a fifth grader who has attended the school since kindergarten. "Ever since I've been here she's been very helpful. She's always around whenever we need her, and she gets involved in all the school projects." Other students echo these feelings. "I think she's made a lot of progress for the school," says Jodi Jaffe, a sixth grader. "And she's always so happy," adds Alisa Block. "June Thorpe Day" was originated with the school's Student Council, and every learning center participated by writing letters and poems, and setting up bulletin boards, in Mrs. Thorpe's honor The council also presented her with a corsage. What was Mrs. Thorpe's reaction to this disruption of the normal routine? "This is the nicest day that I can remember," she said. CG High receives award

Coral Gables Senior High School received a Half Century Membership Award Certificate from the Florida Committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Secondary Schools. Gable' is one of the few schools in Florida that has maintained continuous accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for 50 years or more. "This is a remarkable and noteworthy achievement," said Herman Frick, executive secretary of the committee. "It is a reflection of the dedicated efforts of the principal and superintendent, School Board members, teachers, students and the community generally, to provide quality education for all youth in the community throughout the year.

Auction

The Mothers Guild of Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, 5525 SW 84th St., is sponsoring their sixth annual auction on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28 and 29. The Friday evening program will begin at 7 p.m. for those who care to browse, and the auction starts at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the grounds will be open at 9 a.m. and the auction will begin at 10 a.m. Furniture, bikes, china, silver, plants and much more will be up for bids.

Funny play

South Dade's newest high school, Miami Southridge, is presenting Noel Coward's hilarious comedy "Blithe Spirit". This is Southridge's first major production and the cast members include Tim Greeson, Judi Goldman, Christie Adams, Crytyl Crawford, Steve Feice, Diane Snell and MaryAnn Shelden. The play, directed by Rick Adams, opens Wednesday, Jan. 19, and runs until Friday, Jan. 21. Curtain time for each show is 7:30 p.m. For tickets call 238-6110.
