South Miamian races to sixth straight win in Gordon 100

Duff Daily in his famous "Oh Mona!" boat (No. 333) rounds a turn during the Mike Gordon 100 on his way to another Grand National victory. By FRANK TURSI Staff Writer In weather more suited to ducks, South Miamian Duff Daily battled rain, churning whitecaps and 16 other Grand National(GN) drivers to win the Mike Gordon 100 at Miami Marine Stadium Sunday. The victory marked the sixth time in as many years that Daily, the defending GN national champion, has won the race, and it earned the 23-year-old City of Miami fireman $2,400 in prize money. Though Daily took the lead after four laps and was never seriously challenged, the victory didn't come easy. "I never worked so hard for a race," he said Monday. "I blew an engine last week and had to stay up all night Saturday rebuilding a new one. I was beat before I sat down behind the wheel." He said he had his doubts whether the rebuilt engine could withstand the rigors of a 15-minute qualifying heat and the 45-minute final. Apparently those doubts were unfounded, as Daily took the checkered flag after 36 laps with an average speed of better than 80 miles per hour. The weather, which at best could be described as lousy, actually helped the young skipper. "It made it harder on the other drivers," he said.
