Gablesgrams

By HELEN REYNOLDS, SOCIETY EDITOR Coral Gables' hostesses find that coffees are a pleasant and acceptable way to entertain large or small groups especially during the hot weather days. With the morning hours from 11 to 1 chosen, it leaves time for shopping before, and other appointments later in the afternoon. Mrs. Richard F. Giersch, Jr., 1508 Avenue Mendaiva, entertained a large group of her friends yesterday at a coffee. The party really was in honor of her daughter, Mrs. Lyman G. Watt, nee Elizabeth Giersch, who is moving to New York. Elizabeth's husband, a master pilot for Pan American Airways, has been transferred to the New York territory. The couple has already purchased a home on Long Island . . . Mrs. John (Jack) Harding's coffee Wednesday at her home, 3702 Toledo Drive, brought together an interesting neighborhood group. Many of the newcomers to the neighborhood were meeting one another for the first time. It was determined that Mrs. Henry Clay Anderson, 3701 Toledo, was the "dean" of the neighborhood residents; Mrs. R. Fulton Webb, 3825 on the Drive, the newest. * * * Mrs. William L. Huntley of 725 North Greenway Drive, will give the first in her summer series of parties, honoring early departees for northern vacations, at the Quarterdeck Club Thursday, May 15. This popular party giver will entertain her bridge group and several extra tables. Guests will gather at 11:45 a.m. on the appointed day at Pier One. * * * Birthday bells are ringing today for Mrs. Percy E. Trippe of 1109 Avenue Almeria, who is marking her 90th milestone. Coming in by plane to help celebrate the day is Mrs. Trippe's son, Graham Trippe, of Chicago, Ill. Another son, Richard, and his family and Mrs. Trippe's daughter, Mrs. Trippe Whitaker and granddaughter, Regina Whitaker, will attend the family dinner party. Mrs. Trippe, formerly of Kittaning, Pa., has lived in Coral Gables for the past 22 years. With her late husband the distinguished Colonel P. E. Trippe, who fought the Indians as a member of the United States Cavalry forces, she has resided in most every army post in the United States, and the Philippines. Col. Trippe chose Coral Gables for his home at his retirement more than 20 years ago, lived until about a year ago. * * * Dr. and Mrs. E. H. Williams are leaving May 17 by plane for New York City, where they vacation for about two weeks. While there Dr. Williams will attend the annual meeting of the Psychiatric Association at the Pennsylvania Hotel. . . . Mr. and Mrs. William G. Friedmann of 3240 Riviera Drive have as their guests for two weeks at their Miami Beach home, 8525 Collins Avenue, Mrs. Margaret Hart, Katherine Hynes of Chicago, Ill.; Miss Erna Miehlke of Coral Gables and Miss Nora A. Comerford of Chicago, Ill. * * * Mrs. Raymond Milliken entertained at luncheon yesterday at the Country Club of Coral Gables honoring three close friends who, with their husbands, are moving to other parts of the United States. They are Mrs. Lyman G. Watt and Mrs. W. P. Monan who will reside in New York, and Mrs. W. L. Witherspoon in San Francisco. * * * They are really doing things at the Country Club of Coral Gables these days. The popular fashion show-luncheons, which began with the season, are being continued by demand. More than 100 reservations have been made, by members and their guests, for this event tomorrow. Helen Lane and her models will be there to show "what is what" for summer-time wear. Then we hear the first showing of "Jason" Tuesday night has been sold out and all those who wanted (but didn't get their tickets) to see the show will have to wait until Thursday.

Last year 3,410 persons were killed and 120,608 injured in U. S. traffic accidents as a result of driving on the wrong side of the road. Drive right!
