Accuracy Plus!

When Eugene Field was a cub reporter he worked for an editor who was a great stickler for accuracy. Field was not very methodical, and moreover he possessed too much imagination to stick to facts. Finally the editor told the frisky young reporter to be more careful of his facts or get out. Field promised to be good. "What's this, Field?" the editor yelled one day, while running through an account of a meeting that Field had turned in. "You say, 'Three thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine eyes were fixed on the speaker'!" "Simple enough," Field gleefully replied. "There was a one-eyed man in the audience."

No Horse Sense

A farmer was plowing a field with one horse, but he kept yelling: "Giddap, Jack! Giddap, Jerry! Giddap, Casey!" Finally someone standing near asked, "Why does your horse have three names?" The farmer replied, "I put blinders on him and yell three names so he'll think he has two other horses helping him."

Half and Half

"Hello, Henry," said Joe to a friend he had not seen for several months. "How's everything?" "Ain't you heard, Joe?" Henry replied, "I'se been devorced." "Do tell!" said Henry. "What did you and your woman do with dat house you-all owned?" "Oh, we divided it up." "Divided yo house?" rejoined Joe, looking slightly puzzled. "How?" "Fifty-fifty!" said Henry. "She takes de inside an' I takes de outside."
