Accident Rate Shows Increase, Survey Reveals
HARTFORD, CONN., (Special) —More Americans were killed and injured in automobile accidents last year than in any year since before the war, according to figures released by The Travelers Insurance Company. The 1946 totals—33,900 killed and 1,300,000 injured—are contained in a booklet entitled "You Bet Your Life", thirteenth in an annual series of traffic safety publications issued by the company. In a foreword to the booklet, Jesse W. Randall, president of The Travelers, describes the 1946 automobile accident summary as "America's traffic lottery." "To save minutes, motorists and pedestrians take chances. Seldom do they pause to consider how great the risk because they don't expect to lose. Yet they do lose. Remember", he concludes, "when you gamble in traffic, you bet your life."
What was once a Japanese tank rolls off a Kyushu assembly line a bulldozer, to be marketed for plowing snow and clearing rubble. It's a product of the Yawata works of the Japan Iron and Steel Co. The Yawata works was the first Jap target to feel the B-29 blows.

LA LECHE SHRINE ANNALS TELL OF MASS FLORIDA DEPOPULATION IN BRITISH OCCUPATION OF 1763
By J. L. VOLLBRECHT St. Augustine, Fla.—Florida today is proud to advertise itself as the fastest-growing state in the nation, but 184 years ago the Orange Blossom State was the fastest-depopulating territory in the world! In 1763, turning their backs on a new British government, the entire Spanish colony in Florida packed up and sailed for Latin America. This singular exodus has been largely overlooked by late historians but in St. Augustine, at the historic shrine of La Leche, the story is often told as a still fresh experience.
