FOUND: A FIREMAN WHO SCORNS CHECKERS
Found: A member of the Coral Gables Fire Department who can't play checkers. Despite all rumors that firemen spend their leisure time playing checkers, J. T. Kelley, Jr., who has been a Gables fire-fighter for 20 years, confessed that he never takes part in the game. Kelley, whose home is at 12 Avenue Alcantarea, became a member of the department Dec. 29, 1926, and since that time has watched its changes with interest. "When I first came with the department there were three fire Seventh in a stations in Coral Gables," Series on he stated. "Station No. 1 was Members of the Fire and located at Sal- Police Depts. zado and Alcantara; No. 2 at Altagra and Laguna, and No. 3 at the Biltmore Hotel garage. In 1939 the department moved to its present location." Kelley, who is an acting lieutenant during the absence of Lt. W. O. Wood, worked at all three stations during their existence. At one time the Coral Gables fire group boasted a squad of 36 men, three fire engines, a city service truck, and a chemical truck. At present there are 24 men, two engines and a ladder truck. July 1, 1945, is a date that will be remembered by Kelley. Besides being his birthday, that was the day of the big oil fire in the northwest section. Kelley was on duty then and while fighting the fire he was hit in the stomach by a stream of water, which knocked him out instantly. Hailing from Gainesville, Fla., "Junior," as he is called by fellow firemen, boasts that he is one of three men in the department who were born in Florida. "The rest of them had to come to a good state; we were born here," he pointed out. A member of the Florida East Coast Pistol League, Kelley holds the offices of secretary, treasurer, publicity chairman and statistician. He is also a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters. From 1938 through 1941 he was promoted and put on the Flamingo Open Pistol Tournament, a national affair with entries from all parts of the United States and Cuba.

Service To Be Keynote Of New Optimist President
After two years of service in the capacity of vice-president, James H. Brinson has stepped up to the president's chair in the Coral Gables Optimists club. New Top man in the organization, Brinson has been a resident in this community for 17 years, and earned his title of president through his energy and service to the club. A Gainesville resident for many years prior to his establishment in Coral Gables, he attended the University of Florida. He owned a gasoline station here for 13 years, and since then has worked in the accounting department of Eastern Airlines. His two children, Jimmy, 13, and Ann, 16, were both born here and have been attending schools in the Gables. His brother Paul, also a Coral Gables resident, is an attorney and former commissioner. Another brother and sister are living in the northern part of Florida. A member of the Methodist Church and the Phi Delta Theta alumni association, Brinson finds time to be active in both organizations. He became a charter member of the Optimists Club when it was organized in 1940, and has proved himself one of its most industrious members ever since. "The organization plans to continue with its enlargement of the Boy's Club program", Brinson stated. "At present the Junior Optimists Club, which is being sponsored at Ponce de Leon High School by the senior group is running an oratorical contest at the school. The contest will decide which boy is to attend the state Optimists Club convention in St. Petersburg on May 8 to 9. The winner will be sent to Denver, Colorado to compete in the national contest," Brinson concluded. The Junior Optimists Club meets at the Youth Center, which was arranged through the efforts of the senior group, who also sponsor the baseball team at the grammar school. The Optimists new president expects to continue the work accomplished through past leaders to make service the keynote of his new term.

'U' To Operate Marine Laboratory In New Aquarium
University of Miami will operate a marine laboratory in the new Dade county aquarium to be constructed according to Park H. Campbell, Dade county attorney. In Tallahassee, trustees of the internal improvement fund authorized construction of the aquarium and marine laboratory on the south end of Virginia Key. Near Causeway The property deed forbade use of the land for anything but public purposes so it was decided to use it for the new aquarium site. Present plans show the aquarium will be near the Rickenbacker Causeway comprising about eight acres for buildings, parking space, and other facilities. A fishing and operational dock will be placed at the seaward end of the main building complete with hoists and special equipment.
Restrictions on Overseas Mail Are Lifted
Parents, friends and sweethearts of Coral Gables servicemen will now be able to send overseas packages directly to their boys in service without carrying a letter to the postmaster showing that a request was made by the soldier. Packages will be shipped out without this red tape if the weight is seventy pounds or less. Prior to May 1st of this year and including the war period packages addressed to overseas servicemen had to carry a notification of request before the shipment was allowed. Notification of the change in mailing regulations came from J. L. Beauchamp, superintendent of the Coral Gables Post Office today.
Hauri Describes Life in Colombia
Martin Hauri, Miami architect, was guest speaker at the Thursday morning meeting of the Coral Gables Breakfast Club, at the Sevilla Restaurant. For two years prior to the war, he practiced in Bogota, Colombia, said Mr. Hauri, is a country where ten per cent of the people are too rich and the remaining 90 per cent too poor, and consequently petty theft is prevalent. For instance, when you park your car, it is customary to take off the windshield wiper and anything else detachable, and then hire a boy to watch your car. At that time, a good cook received $18 a month, and out of this paid the second servant. The Colombians are enthusiastic circus addicts, and noisily applaud a good picture. However, if the picture is poor, they insert taper matches under their finger nails, light them, and hold these improvised torches aloft until there is so much light that nobody can see the picture.
Improved Bus Service Asked By Industries
A petition requesting better bus service for the industrial section of Coral Gables, was presented to the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The plea was signed by 12 firms doing business in that area, which lies south of Bird and east of LeJeune Road. The signing firms employ over 400 workmen. Presented at yesterday's luncheon meeting of the civic group by President Charles B. Tutan, the petition evoked the comment that the "University" bus serving that area is so crowded with students that workers in the area cannot find room. The petition will be forwarded to the city manager for action.
A month after the Third Army went into action, August 1, 1944, some of its elements were fighting 500 miles apart and so fast was its advance that at one time it had 1,000 miles of exposed flanks, practically unprotected. The Third Army's attack on Metz was launched in the worst weather that area had seen in 35 years. Rain and ceiling "zero" kept all Allied planes on the ground, but without air support, the Third Army captured Metz ahead of schedule.
Last year, 60 per cent of all Americans killed in automobile accidents met death during the hours of darkness. Night and day-drive carefully!
