CORAL GABLES Country Club
BY JOYCE EDWARDS Open season is on for people who fail to duck when they hear the call of "fore" in the vicinity of the golf course. Nevertheless, it's really nothing to be greatly alarmed over, it's just the younger set warming up for the Greater Miami Junior Golf Championship. The tournament is scheduled to get under way bright and early Monday morning on the Granada course. All Club juniors, 18 or under, are welcome to enter the tournament. The winner will be rewarded with the Melbourne Martin trophy, donated by Martin. The trophy may be kept in the possession of the winner until the new low man is announced next year. Another prize of $50 in golf equipment is being offered by Charles Miller. Hawley Russell is donating a prize of one dozen golf balls. During the contest, Gordon Taylor will provide a free luncheon at the Club for the golfers. 'PLAY IS SELL-OUT The showing of "Junior Miss" won the production playing to three complete sell-outs. It all goes to prove that the Country Clubbers are becoming as stage conscious as some of our more distant relatives located way up there in gay ole' New York. Wednesday evening the group was hard at work choosing the new play. Readings for the new production will be held at 8 p.m. Monday in the Granada Room. All of the Club members are especially urged to attend the readings and try out for the parts. The aim of the group is to have the cast vary as much as possible with each production. The new play is scheduled to begin the latter part of June. HITS TENNIS TRAIL The highlight in the tennis news comes with the announcement that Marta Barnett Andrade will again make the rounds of the summer tournaments, competing for several titles around the country. Miss Andrade, second top player in the south, will leave here June 15 to attend the Southern Championship Tournament in New Orleans. After the southern matches, she will proceed to Chicago to participate in the Illinois State Championship. She will display her skills at the Western Hard Court matches to be held in Wisconsin. Finally she will attend the Grass Court Circuit which will center around New York and Boston. Sunday will see the winner in the Women's Finals. The matches will begin at the courts at 2 p.m. ROESCH WINS SINGLES In the Men's Singles this week, Ben Roesch defeated Gerald Monsalvatge 6-1, 6-4. The Men's Consolation match produced Tom Blakey victor over Gordon Taylor, 6-4, 6-0. The Girl's Singles found Jean Craig the winner over Susan Refner, 6-0, 6-2. Billy Larson came out victorious in the Boy's Singles, with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 over James Sandberg. Royalty and flowers, as well as soft music and merriment, will be combined on June 6 when the Royal Coronation Ball takes place at the Country Club as a part of the Poincianna Festival. The dance, beginning at nine, will be open to members of the Club and their guests as well as to members of all civic and social organizations of the Gables. There is no charge for the dance. Dress is semi-formal. Table reservations should be made through the Country Club. The last fashion show was well received. On June 14 there will be a certain call for the feature in the form of the popular fashion show-luncheon combination. Gables Model Plane Enthusiasts Eye First International Competition
Attention of Gables model airplane enthusiasts who turn the Youth Center field into an aviation center each weekend, was focussed today on the International Model Plane Contest to be held at Detroit, Mich., Aug. 13-16. Blind Victimized By Cruel Hoax
The Florida Council for the Blind today excoriated perpetrators of a cruel hoax by which sightless persons are led to believe that the hoarding of empty match folders, tinfoil, cigarette wrappers or red cellophane bands would aid them in obtaining Seeing Eye dogs. "This is a cruel hoax which started a few years ago on the Eastern Seaboard and has now spread all over the country," a spokesman for the Council declared. "We thought we had succeeded in stopping it but apparently it has come to life again." "Such a rumor might result in great disappointment to a blind person who, after months of careful saving of such articles, finds they have no effect whatsoever in determining eligibility for a Seeing Eye dog." Pointing out that no blind person has ever been denied the Seeing Eye service for lack of funds, the Council urged applicants to apply to The Seeing Eye, Morristown, N.J. for correct information. This is no time for small men in big jobs. We need great men in all jobs—even little ones.
Home Ec Students Entertain Ponce Parent-Teachers
Queen—not for a day, but for life—was the theme of the skit presented by the home economics department of Ponce de Leon High School before members of the Parent-Teacher Association at the group's final meeting of the current year on Wednesday. The department, headed by Mrs. Virginia Gleason, sewing, and Mrs. Marguerit Cleveland, cooking, was in charge of the entire program. Patsy Simmons wrote the skit entitled "Queen Model Agency," and Klenna Ann Duggar, who placed third in the "My Favorite Brunette" contest, served as mistress of ceremonies. One hundred and thirty Ponce home economic students participated in the show, which featured the girls who won various home economics awards this year. These included Helen Hagler, best posture; Mildred Smith, prettiest hands; Anne Meyer, best complexion, and Joy Drude, most beautiful hair. Also Ann Symmes and Joy Drude, who won the DAR girl homemaker medals. At the conclusion of the style show the Patricia Vance School of Modeling and Charm will award two scholarships to the girls judged to have best personality, poise, etc. The following officers who will lead the Ponce PTA next year were installed: Mrs. Bowman F. Hinckley, president; Mrs. Judson Hill, first vice president; Mrs. Ruth Johnston, second vice president; Mrs. Nell Farwell, recording secretary; Mrs. Carolyn D. Stephenson, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Arthur Gulliver, treasurer.
