Gables American Legion Post and Auxiliary Name Two Married Couples to 1st, 2nd Positions
BY BOBBIE COLLIER For the first time in the history of the Coral Gables American Legion Post No. 98, and its Auxiliary, a married couple will assume responsibilities of the commandership of the post and the presidency of the auxiliary. To cement these two organizations even more strongly together the first vice commander's job and the first vice presidency of both groups will also be held by a married couple. Mr. and Mrs. F. Rexier Wickard and Mr. and Mrs. Paul P. Savage, Jr., will head the organizations this year. Mr. Wickard has been named commander of the Coral Gables Legion post and his wife, Eugenia will assume the duties of the presidency of the ladies auxiliary. To add flavor to this joint leadership program of the organizations, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Savage, Jr., will take over the duties of first vice commander and first vice president respectively. The Wickards have been active in American Legion work for many years, and after holding offices last year, the couple has decided that this new set-up will work to the advantage of both organizations. Mrs. Wickard expressed her views by saying that both groups hope to cooperate with each other more than in the past. Both Mr. and Mrs. Wickard hope to live up to the preamble of the American Legion. Mr. Wickard believes that not only is it a beautiful and wonderful piece of writing, but that if the people of the world would follow its philosophy the world would be a better place in which to live. To date the new commander has been getting his numerous committees together and plans to start working on his pet idea. "The big thing in my mind is to build a new legion home. The property owned by the legion is that which was previously the old fire house," he told your reporter. Plans for next month's auxiliary activities will be centered around the junior activities. At this time, Mrs. Wickard is going to try to raise the very much depleted junior membership to as many members as the regular auxiliary has. "I have some very fine officers who will help me," she said. The hobbies of the Wickards also center around the same things. Both are very much interested in the American Children's Home and a great deal of their time is expounded in this work. A little freckle-faced Ila, the Wickard's 10-year-old daughter, is another member of the family who takes active part in this hobby. Each child who has a birthday receives $1 and a birthday card from Ila, herself. The three Wickards are also interested in gardenia and rose bushes. The 200 or 300 gardenias that come off their bushes every day are given to their customers who patronize any one of the three beauty salons owned by the Wickards. The women who receive the huge gardenia blooms at the Alma Sanches shop can't get over the beauty and the size of the flowers. Mr. Wickard takes care of them as though they were babies, claims Mrs. Wickard. Mr. Wickard, who used to be a southpaw for the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals was manager of the Harvey Seeds American Legion Post's baseball team. The boys' team that carries his name, The Wickards, are one of the major baseball teams competing at the Youth Center. Prior to the time he was installed as commander of the legion post, he also served on the baseball committee of the organization. Mrs. Wickard's hobbies include designing and sewing her own clothes. "It's much easier to sew them than to go out and look for them." A graduate of Traphagen School in New York, Mrs. Wickard was a fashion artist for many years and did the Cutex ads for the Chicago World's Fair. She specialized in doing art work of the hands and did much of the work of the Cutex company. After competing in bridge tournaments for many years she built up an immunity to cards and now "I hate playing," is her phrase. Daughter Ila now takes up a great deal of her time, and, to add to her hobbies she does volunteer hospital work for the veterans' hospitals. The Joy Shop, which is part of the volunteer work done for the three veterans' hospitals, takes up a lot of her time in crocheting and knitting. With all the work the Wickards do they still have time to formulate tentative plans and numerous ideas to help the organizations which they now collectively head.
