Tourney to Present Tennis 'Greats' of South Florida
The battle for survival in the first round of the First Annual Coral Gables Invitational Tournament will get under way at 2:30 p.m. Monday on the Salvadore Park tennis courts. In action on the clay courts will be the cream of South Florida's tennis crop, many of whom will be all over the country when the call is called for the National Championship matches at Forest Hills later this summer. Buddy Behrens and Ben Boesch, two hard-hitting young netters, are expected to furnish plenty of fireworks in their first-round go, and the tilt between Ted Slack and Al Schuster will be strictly a revenge affair. Schuster is out to retaliate for the defeat delivered by Slack in the recent University of Miami tourney. Bernie Schreiber and Q. M. Gornto can be relied upon to go the limit. Gornto snagged honors at their first meeting in the Henderson Park Night competition. A purely local battle will be staged by Joe Harmuth, representing Salvadore Park and Buz Bis-mark, who carries the colors of the Coral Gables Country Club. Dr. Jules Rickles of Miami Beach and Bill Turner of the University of Miami will compete for the right to play in the second round and a David-and-Goliath affair will be the first-round set to between Bruce Johnson and Jack Waters. Jerry Monsalvatge, whom many predict will one day be heard from in the National Championships, will try his skill against Gardner Mulloy, who has already copped a whopping share of national and international tennis honors. The first round draw: Mulloy vs Monsalvatge Jack Kinnon vs Jack Peavy Hobart Wrobbel vs Frank Keister Schreiber vs Gornto Frank Froehling vs Larry Larson Rickles vs Turner Schuster vs Slack Bob Paige vs Harris Everett Behrens vs Boesch Mort Uhlman vs Lloyd Bates Harmuth vs Bismark Harry Meng vs Bud Hart Tony Vincent vs Sol Rovin Bruce Johnson vs Jack Waters Allan Richardson vs Dick Bell Charles Lundgren vs George Pero
CITY CORRECTS STREET NUMBER CONFUSION
Coral Gables' city fathers this week launched an offensive on a "numbers racket" all our own. The "racket" caused frequent rackets in post office circles when mailmen attempted to deliver letters to businesses with duplicate numbers on the Miracle Mile section of Coral Way. So a renumbering system was devised by City Engineer L. W. Robinson Jr., which eliminated the half a dozen pairs of like numbers and brought order out of numerical chaos for the rest of the Mile. An ordinance putting into effect Robinson's recommendations was placed on first reading this week and will be adopted officially by the commissioners when they meet on Monday evening. "We ought to get into that ordinance that the merchants must use the numbers we assign," Robinson told the commissioners. "We have given numbers to several places of business and they have changed the mio suit themselves." The ordinance also will eliminate fractions next to the numerical designations now in effect
Thieves Net $3,000 from Hide & Seek
(Continued from Page One) wall racks the following morning. "Pink and yellow were the colors that evidently caught their fancy," the owner explained. "The blue dresses were scorned." Greatest blow as far as Mrs. Schuiling was concerned was theft of her portable sewing machine on which alterations were made, but an electric steam iron was overlooked. Unwilling to chance detection in the spotlight that illuminates the front of the shop, the marauders confined their attention to stock in the rear portion of the store. Schuiling said the stock was uninsured at the time of the robbery — "But you can bet it is now," he added. Coral Gables Detective C. F. MacNeil said today that tire tracks discovered in the delivery alley in back of the store indicated the burglars had backed a dual-wheeled truck up to the door to receive the loot. "Marks on the door show they tried unsuccessfully to jimmy the door open, then cut the screen and broke the glass to turn the lock from the inside," he said. More than a million American adults were injured in 1946 automobile accidents. Drive carefully!
Grunt-and-Groaners Added 'Detraction' on Jaycee Card
Added detraction at the Jaycee boxing matches Tuesday was a rasslin' riot between mighty Rockrama Roberts, 195 1/2, and Stoneface Sobec, 205—staged, no doubt, to show what happens to people who get their heads mashed under a steamroller. At the bell, Referee Paul Cousins rushed into the ring. He was chased right out by Roberts and Sobec because they hadn't finished their pre-bout meal of old rope, floor canvas and beer. Stoneface started crying when told the beer was for rubdown, not drinkdown purposes, but switched to groaning as Rockrama wrapped him up in a hammer-lock for the first fall. Sobec was loosening one of Roberts eyeballs when a ringsider waved a 50-cent piece. His back was turned (not to the half dollar), when Rockrama snuck up and pinned him to the canvas for the second time. "I am hoit to duh quick by dat stinkin' referee," protested the defeated wrestler with simple dignity. "I was just hurryin' outta duh ring to tell dat guy it's naughty to try to rooin' my amachure standin'."
