Eight and Forty Appointments Announced by Chapeau Koehler
Appointments for the coming year of the Eight and Forty, honor organization of the American Legion Auxili- arus, were recently made by Mrs. Jesse N. Koehler, Chapeau. Mrs. Ralph Peckham was named chairman of the Tuber- culosis Type program, and her committee includes Mrs. Jack Gwinn of Coconut Grove Unit; Mrs. Augusta Sachs of the Coral Gables Unit; Mrs. Norton Granger of the Harvey Seeds Unit; Mrs. Jennie Pittman of the Hialeah Unit; Mrs. Etta Green of the Miami Beach Unit; Mrs. H. E. McFarland of the Miami Shores Unit; who is also on the funds committee; Mrs. R. E. Rogers of the North Miami Unit; who is also on the contact, membership, and fund committee; and Mrs. H. W. Vanderbough of the South Miami Unit. Mrs. Edward Humer was ap- pointed chairman of the T. B. Project (books and library); Mrs. Paul Sears, Education and Institu- tion; Mrs. Max Froom, Christmas Seal sale; Mrs. L. M. Stoutenburg, birthday, Christmas; and Easter cards in the tubercular hospital. Chairman of membership is Mrs. Nina Johns. Her committee in- cludes Mrs. Michael Fassell; Mrs. Elizabeth Bridson; Mrs. Pearl Robinson; Mrs. David E. McMil- lan; Mrs. C. Mae Davis; Mrs. Lester Ribel, who is also on the contact committee; and Mrs. W. H. Angerman. Mrs. W. E. Burkins was ap- pointed contact chairman. Includ- ed on her committee are Mrs. F. E. Henry, Mrs. L. L. Hunter, Mrs. E. O. Wilson, Miss Elise Ehrman, and Mrs. Louis Van Schrader. Chairman of the years project for raising funds is Mrs. Marvin Merrifield. Her committee includes Mrs. L. C. Henry, Mrs. Raymond Perry, Mrs. Jack Jayson, Mrs. Louise Beacher, Mrs. Doris K. Green, and Mrs. R. F. Riley. Also on the Board are: Mrs. Edward C. Morgan, meeting ar- rangements; Mrs. Edwin J. Bar- ker and Mrs. Arellia Stewart co- program chairmen; Mrs. A. E. Reinhart, publicity; Mrs. Harriet Christian, hospitality; Mrs. S. S. Mccall, Constitution and By- Laws. Serving on the Finance, Ways and Means committee will be Mrs. J. V. Trent, Mrs. Carl Gluck, and Mrs. Charles Ernest. Other new chairmen include: Mrs. Larry Duncan; Mrs. J. M. Bryant; Mrs. Erma Brown; Mrs. L. S. Upchurch; Mrs. Julius Nai- man; Mrs. Robert Lee Stephens; Mrs. Neil Otta; Mrs. Jack Rich- ings.

BY HELEN REYNOLDS, SOCIETY EDITOR Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Green write from Asheville, N.C. where they are now residing permanently following many years residence in Coral Gables. She says the blooming azaleas and the other spring flowers belonging to the moun- tainous country are now at their beautiful best. * * * Mrs. W. R. Rowe of 1309 Avenue Obispo is leaving next week for Greenville, Pa., for a visit with her father, Samuel A. Hum, who has often been a winter visitor to Coral Gables. Later she will go on to New Hampshire to witness her son Samuel Ridge graduate from Exeter School. Both Mrs. Rowe and Samuel will return here to join Captain Rowe for the summer. Samuel will enter Harvard in the fall. * * * Dr. and Mrs. Ralph L. Engle, 1207 Columbus Boulevard, will have as their house guests for two weeks, their son and daughter in law, Lieutenant Ralph L. Engle Jr. and Dr. Mary Allen Engle and her mother Mrs. Vera English of Dallas, Texas. Lieutenant Engle is stationed at Ft. Belvoir, Va., where he is in charge of the Pathological Laboratory in the hospital. His wife Dr. Mary Allen Engle is an assistant in the Pediatric department of the Johns Hopkins Univer- sity and assistant in the heart clinic of Johns Hopkins Hos- pital, Baltimore, Md. This clinic has recently become world famous in the treatment of Blue Babies. * * * The Coral Gables Country Club will be the scene of the annual recital of Sylvia Furlong's interpretative reading class Monday night. Guests and students of the Drama and Speech department and their parents, and friends of the studio are cordially invited to attend. The presentation will take place in the main ball room. Miss Furlong is leaving May 31st for Camp Alpine, Ala., where she will teach dramatics for three months. Her Gables studio will reopen in September. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Carleton Tweed entertained about 40 guests at cocktails Wednesday at five o'clock at their home, 927 Avenue Valencia. The party preceded the dinner at the Country Club of Coral Gables at which members of the bridge mixed bridge group, of which the Tweeds are mem- bers, celebrated the ending of the winter tournament. * * * Thrills galore were contained in the telegram which interrupted the last meeting of the Ponce de Leon High school P-T.A Wednesday. The wire was from Mrs. Willard Hubbell the D.A.R. delegate from the Coral Gables Chapter in Washington, D.C. and announced that Ponce economics student Ann Symmes had just won the National D.A.R. award for her original dress entry. Ann, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee E. Symmes, Jr., of 9103 Coral Way, won the local and state awards for her entry. At the time of the wire's arrival, Ann was busy with other girls in the home economics department serving tea to members and guests at the meeting.
NEW OFFICERS ANNOUNCED
Two new officers were elected and three re-elected Wednesday when Beta Delta chapter of Sig- ma Kappa sorority held their semester election. The president Martha Horlam- us; first vice-president, Lizabeth Horlamus; and second vice-presi- dent, Henrietta Fenner were re- elected. The new secretary is Joyce Cortland and the new treas- urer, Louise Jenkins.
