COMMISSION OF MINISTERS TO ORGANIZE CHURCH SUNDAY Gables Presbyterian Church Will Be Third of Faith in City
The Presbytery of St. Johns, Synod of Florida, Presbyterian Church U. S., acting through a commission consisting of ministers A. R. Larrick, D. D., J. C. Pelgrim, D. D., J. C. Frist, D. D., and J. V. Johnson, D. D., and of Ruling Elders M. J. Frierson, George S. Lenfesty, G. M. McNutt, C. G. Young, and R. Bruce Minear, will meet next Sunday evening (June 29) at 7:30 o'clock in the auditorium of the Merrick Demonstration School, 39 Zamora Avenue, for the purpose of organizing the Gables Presbyterian Church. Rev. A. R. Larrick, D.D., of Plant City, Florida, and Presbytery's Superintendent of Home Missions will preside; Rev. J. V. Johnson, D.D., pastor of the Miami Springs Presbyterian Church will deliver the charge to the pastor, and Mr. G. M. McNutt, Ruling Elder in the Shenandoah Presbyterian Church of Miami, will deliver the charge to the congregation. The commission will receive the credentials of those wishing to become charter members of the church, following which the congregation will proceed to elect elders and deacons who will be installed by the commission. The commission will be prepared to receive a call from the newly-organized church, formally extended to the Rev. B. M. Larson, D.D., to become their pastor. Mr. J. N. Vernam, chairman of the pre-organization committee stated that Dr. Larson had been brought to Miami by his committee in cooperation with the Presbytery's Home Mission committee with view to his becoming pastor of the church when organized. Mr. Vernam said: "It is anticipated that Dr. Larson will accept the call when formally extended him, and that he will be installed by the commission next Sunday evening." Dr. Larson and his family are residing at 1202 Genoa Street in the Gables. Mr. Vernam said: "We were highly pleased with the attendance at the first Sunday school session and church service conducted on last Sunday. The Sunday School has a staff of teachers and leaders prepared to care for all age groups; the church service is one of inspiration, worship and deep spiritual helpfulness." The Sunday School convenes at 9:45 a.m. and the service of worship at 11 a.m. Dr. Larson announces as his sermon topic for next Sunday's 11 a.m. church service, "The Growing Church."
Catholic
Church of the Little Flower, 1120 Avenue Anastasia. The Rev. Thomas Comber, pastor. Sunday masses, 6:30, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 a.m. Daily mass 6:30 and 7:45 (Convent chapel). Confessions Saturday, 4 to 5 and 7:30 to 9 p.m. Baptisms at 4 p.m. (by appointment only).
Lutheran
Divine worship will be held at the St. James Lutheran Church, Phoenctia Avenue at East Ponce de Leon Blvd., Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. Looking forward to our celebration of our national independence the pastor, Rev. C. J. Soistman, will preach on the subject: "What Kind of a Religion Will Save Our Country?" The Sunday School meets at 10 o'clock Sunday morning, providing christian education for all age groups. The youth confirmation class meets Friday afternoon at 4 at the church. The Lutheran League meets Sunday evening at 7 o'clock. Adult members of the congregation are invited to join with the leaguers in hearing an address and viewing pictures concerning a Lutheran Orphanage in Altdorf, Germany.
Methodist
Dr. J. H. Daniel, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will use as his sermon topic Sunday in commemoration of Independence Day, "God's Hand in American History." During the absence of Mrs. C. H. Neill, on vacation, Mrs. J. L. Logan will direct the choir. The anthem for Sunday is "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," by Shelley. Beryl Williams will be guest soloist. She will sing "O, Rest in the Lord," by Elijah."
Christian Science
First Church of Christ, Scientist in Coral Gables is opposite City Hall Park. Morning Service 11 a.m. Evening service, 8 p.m. Sunday School, 11 a.m. Wednesday evening 8 o'clock. "Christian Science" is the subject of the lesson-sermon which will be read in Churches of Christ, Scientist, throughout the world on Sunday, June 29. The Golden Text is: "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give" (Matthew 10:8). Among the citations which comprise the lesson-sermon is the following from the Bible: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover" (Mark 16:17, 18). The lesson-sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "Jesus established in the Christian era the precedent for all Christianity, theoloav, and healing. Christians are under as direct orders now, as they were then, to be Christlike, to possess the Christ spirit, to follow the Christ-example, and to heal the sick as well as the sinning" (138:17-22).
First Christian
The Rev. John W. Messer, minister of the First Christian Church of Coral Gables, 222 Sidonia Avenue, will preach Sunday on "Christians, No Matter Where." The Church School convenes at 9:30, with a fully graded school, staffed by competent teachers. The young people will meet at 7 o'clock for a program of worship, study and recreation. The official board of the church will meet next Wednesday evening at eight o'clock. The Daily Vacation Church School, conducted by the First Christian Church, will close on Friday. As a closing feature, the entire school will be taken on a picnic to Matheson Hammock. Friday will be "open house" and all the parents and friends are invited to visit the school and observe the work that has been done. There will be no closing evening service. The certificates of promotion and recognition will be given at the closing session Friday morning. There were 48 enrolled in the school. A splendid staff of teachers and workers, 14 in numbers, worked very faithfully and well, in making the school a success. Rev. John W. Messer will be on the faculty of the Florida State Youth Conference, which opens on Sunday, June 29 for one week at Camp O'Leno, Fla. There will be four delegates from the First Christian Church attending this conference. Several others had planned to attend, but will be unable. Mr. Messer will be the director of recreation and will teach two courses: "A Vital Sunday Evening Fellowship" and "Building a Program of World Friendship."
First Presbyterian
Dr. Nevin H. Schaaf, pastor, First Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables, will preach on "The Divine Dynamic" at the 11 o'clock morning worship service Sunday, June 29. Margaret Worthington, soprano, will sing as offertory solo "I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked" (O'Hara). The duet, "Watchman, What of the Night" (Sargeant) will be sung by Gilbert Quigg, tenor and Nicholas Shipskie, bass. Warner Hardman, at the organ, will play "Pastorale" (Carey) and "Triumphal March" (Grieg). Westminster Fellowship invites the youth of the church to hear Mrs. Parks Hunter, guest speaker, at the 7 o'clock meeting Sunday evening in Fellowship Hall. Intermediate Fellowship will be represented at the Florida Fellowship Camp, Rockledge, by Sam Skogstad.
Episcopal
In St. Philip's Church next Sunday Saint Peters Day, the apostle and martyr - Fourth Sunday after Trinity, the services will be the celebration of Holy Communion at 8 a.m. Morning prayer and sermon, by the pastor, Dr. Christopher Sparling, at 11 a.m. Subject: "The Big Fisherman." The anthem, "Seek Ye the Lord," by Roberts, will be presented by the choir, under the direction of Mary Conover Winter, organist and choir director. Organ voluntary, "Lento," Kroeger, and postlude, Hamer. The June-Dec. chapter of the Woman's Auxiliary, Mrs. J. R. Matthews, chairman, will have a "home baked ham dinner" at 3:30 p.m., July 10.
University Baptist
On Sunday, June 29 the pastor of the University Baptist Church, Dr. Ladislau Biro, will bring the message at both the morning worship service at 11 a.m. and the evening worship service at 7:45 p.m. At the morning worship service the choir, under the direction of Mrs. Charles E. Park, will sing "My Faith Looks Up to Thee" by Lachner. Bible School begins at 9:45 a.m., with a class for people of all ages. On Friday, June 27, at 7:30 p.m., commencement exercises for the University Baptist Church Vacation Bible School will be held at the church. This school, which is an annual event, has been in session for the past two weeks. At the commencement exercises there will be an exhibit of the hand-work done by the students in the school and a program presented by the entire school. The parents (Please Turn to Page Five)
