Gardner Mulloy, George Pero Gain C. of C. Sponsorship
Under the joint sponsorship of the Chamber of Commerce and the University of Miami, Coral Gables will be represented in national tennis tournaments this summer by two top-ranking tennis stars. The stars, Gardner Mulloy and George Pero, have already played in two tournaments on their nation-wide tour and are doing pretty well according to reports. At the Kentucky State Open, Mulloy teamed up with Frank Parker to take the doubles championship. Associated With "U" Both men are associated with the University of Miami where Mulloy is a coach and Pero a student. Mulloy is well known as a Davis Cup Champion and Pero ranks about 30th in national competition. They will return this fall to help develop junior players at Salvadore Park, and there is a possibility that a junior tournament will be forthcoming. The summer tour marks the first time that any chamber of commerce has officially sponsored any top-ranking athletes.
Coral Gables Included In Price Survey
Results of a national survey on prices received by the Chamber of Commerce this week revealed that Coral Gables was high on all wages, low on six out of nine building material items, and low on four out of ten market basket items as compared to the rest of the country. This survey, conducted by the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, was made on one day, May 20, in cities of varied sizes and areas. 6 Block Cheaper In building materials, Coral Gables was lower than the national average on concrete block, grade A. concrete, sand, gravel, sheeting and sheet rock. On market basket items, the Gables was lower on rolled butter, pure lard, large eggs and calves liver. Wages Higher Higher than national wages were paid here to journeyman carpenters, master electricians, journeyman plumbers and helper plumbers. As compared to the Florida East Coast, however, Coral Gables paid lower wages to master electricians and helper plumbers. The prices on food items were all obtained from chain stores. The Chamber of Commerce will be glad to furnish further information to interested persons calling at the office, Mrs. Mary T. Moore, executive secretary, stated.
Harry Letaw Is Aquitted
Harry Letaw, Coral Gables druggist, was acquitted of a narcotics charge this week in federal court. Letaw changed a plea of "guilty" to "not guilty" on the grounds that he had not been properly advised of his rights and was given his freedom by the jury. The druggist was arrested several months ago by narcotics agents who charged him with selling narcotics without a prescription. Taken before U. S. Commissioner Roger Edward Davis he entered a plea of "guilty" at that time. Sentenced to serve 16 months by Federal Judge John W. Holland, Letaw obtained counsel and obtained permission to change his plea.

Coral Gables Is Mentioned In Summer Vacation Booklet
A double-barreled appeal to vacationers to spend this summer in Florida is planned by the Florida Power and Light Company, W. D. Fuller, Coral Gables, manager of the company, announced today. In addition to their post card by thousands of its customers every summer since 1937 except during the war, the power company now is presenting an eye-opening booklet to arouse summer vacation interest of Floridians as well as out-of-staters. Entitled "Let's Stay-at-Home ... Play-at-Home," this presentation, originally a feature section of the June issue of the Florida Power and Light Company's house organ, "Sunshine Service News," has attracted such wide interest among those who have seen it that the company is reprinting it as a booklet. Coral Gables is prominently mentioned. Booklet Illustrated Illustrated with lively pictures, the booklet is available to chambers of commerce, business houses "Summer-gram" mailed and individuals free of charge, Fuller, the manager, said. A request to the company's office will bring the desired number of booklets. "Winter visitors have to travel hundreds and thousands of miles to enjoy Florida," Fuller said. "The Florida Power and Light Company plan is for Floridians at much less expense to enjoy all the thrills and fun that winter visitors have here. As for the businessman, this summer vacation dollar is the cheapest new dollar he can reach. He has only to use his winter facilities for new summer business." Postage Is Paid The "Summer-gram," which will also be available at the company's offices in a few days, is a pictorial post card inviting vacationists "to come South to water-cooled Florida and try a summer sample of Florida living." Those who wish may send as many of them as they please. The postage on all "Summer-grams" is paid by Florida Power and Light Company. Over a million of these summertime invitations have been distributed by the company. Attractions of the Coral Gables section of Florida are included in the overall picture of Florida presented in the booklet.
