Butterfly Tree Now Blooming In Local Garden

The Butterfly Tree (Bauhinia Monandra-Kruz), is in bloom at the Fairchild Tropical Garden in Coral Gables. A five-year-old specimen has grown to fifteen feet in height and has an equal spread. The young short leafy branches that arise from the somewhat horizontal hard wood spreading smooth gray barked branches of the tree bear from one to three gorgeous blooms at the tips of each of the numerous short side branches. Large Blooms The large five petaled flowers measure between three and four inches across. Four of the petals are pink speckled with lavender, the fifth or odd petal is recurved and is heavily spotted with carmine. The two lobed leaves which are from three to seven inches wide, are cleft about 1/3 to 1/2 way to the base giving the leaf a distinct butterfly appearance. The tree blooms somewhat later than the more commonly known purple and white Bauhinias that are found thriving in southern and central Florida. Found in Tropics The Bauhinias are found throughout the tropics of the world where more than 200 species are recorded as growing as vines, shrubs and trees. The Butterfly Tree is native to southeastern Asia (Burma) and has been widely planted in many tropical countries in both hemispheres for the ornamental value. Develops Pods After flowering the tree develops dark brown leguminous pods which are from six to nine inches long and about one inch wide. The characteristic twin lobed leaves gave this to the genus Bauhinia in honor of the twin brothers John and Casper Bauhin who were 16th Century botanists. The specific name Monandra refers to the one fertile stamen of the Butterfly Flower which is unusual, for the rest of the Bauhinias normally have from three to ten fertile stamens. Botanically the Bauhinias are most closely related to the temperature zone Red Bud or Judas trees. Many a corsage of the showy Bauhinia blooms has been made that has been mistaken for orchid blooms by the casual observer.

Chamber Seeks Members for Committees

Recently appointed committee chairmen of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce are experiencing some difficulty in obtaining working members for their committees, Mrs. Mary T. Moore, executive secretary, revealed this week. Under a new system, inaugurated this year, chairman were given the freedom of selecting their own committee members with the idea of obtaining co-workers who are interested in the particular phase of activity with which the committee concerns itself. Openings are still available on the membership contact, welcoming, industrial, public affairs, sports, civic projects, advertising and educational committees. Members who are interested and willing to serve are asked to notify the Chamber of Commerce as soon as possible.
