GABLESGRAMS

(Continued from Page Seven) Jimmie, of Jacksonville Beach, have been guests. Captain Asplund and family are leaving by motor Thursday for California and will visit relatives in Chicago and South Bend, en route. In Los Angeles, Captain Asplund will take special work at the University of California in the field of meterology leading to his master's degree. Station weather officer at Boca Raton Army Air Field for the past six months, he is being transferred by the army to the new post. Captain Asplund already is holder of a B.S. degree in meterology from the University of Chicago and is a Phi Beta Kappa man. * * * A letter from Irene McConnell, "Yrene" of Coral Gables, reveals the fact that she is in Highlands, N. C., where she has opened a shop, a branch of "Yrene" for the season. Mrs. McConnell is at the Tricemont Terace for the summer but will be back in her Gables shop come October. * * * A stout heart and determination to continue her lessons on the flute, has made life for Adrienne Barnes, who lies in a cast from head to foot, comparatively happy these last few weeks. Adrienne's broken hip will be set next week and by the time Ponce de Leon High school opens, where she will begin her high school days, Adrienne will be able to hop about on crutches. During the "cast" days, however, Adrienne has been practicing the flute under the tutalage of Parks Hunter and for good measure Peter Hunter, Parks' brother and a classmate of Adrienne's at Elementary, came along to practice his trombone. Both Adrienne and Peter enrolled in the band classes this summer at Ponce. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Denis Renuart are receiving congratulations on the advent of their first grandchild, Kathryn Louise Lanigan, who was born July 11th at Jackson Memorial Hospital, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Lanigan, Jr. The junior Mrs. Lanigan is the former Denise Renuart. The baby's christening will take place Sunday at the Church of the Little Flower. The Lanigan's have a new home at 370 S. W. 50th Avenue.

Promising Art Career Ends With Death of Mrs. Balman

A promising art career was nipped in the bud with the traffic death of Mrs. Martha Casey Balman on July 6, a letter from her mother, Mrs. D. P. Casey, to The Riviera-Times stated this week. The young matron was killed when the motorcycle on which she was riding home from work with a friend was struck by a car driven by John Dabney, 16, of 1102 NE 119th Street. Mrs. Balman resided at 917 SW 16th Avenue. Ponce Graduate Mrs. Casey revealed in her letter to the newspaper that her daughter was a graduate at Ponce de Leon High School, receiving her diploma in 1941. "She was a member of the National Honor Society at Ponce de Leon and had plans to fulfill a lifelong ambition to be a great artist," her mother wrote. She was to have entered the Terry School of Fine Arts in Miami in September. Mrs. Balman was the mother of two boys, one 3 1/2 years and one 11 months old.
