MEET THE JAYCEES 'Gables Has Everything', In Opinion of Frank Tye
"Coral Gables has everything that goes to make an ideal community." So says Frank S. Tye, vice president and manager of the Gables Appliance Company, upon whom the Jaycee spotlight falls as The Riviera-Times resumes its series of articles on members of the Coral Gables Junior Chamber of Commerce. "It's a Privilege" Frank backs up his statement about Coral Gables by adding, "After living in smoky, cold and dirty cities in other parts of the country, I feel that it is a privilege to be able to live in this climate and to be in business in a city which is progressive and constantly expanding." And it was the climate that convinced Tye that he should become a permanent resident of the area. During the war, his mother came to Miami to visit her sister, who lives here. She found that her health responded so well to the climate, that Frank decided to make that permanent home here when the war clouds had passed. Born in Charlotte The 33-year-old Gables businessman first saw the light of day in Charlotte, N. C., on August 2, 1914. He attended school there and took one year of college at the University of North Carolina, majoring in language. In 1943 he volunteered for service in the U. S. Maritime Service as an apprentice seaman. After boot training, he qualified for admission to the School for Ph. M. Mate and took his semi-internship at Staten Island Hospital. He shipped out of San Francisco on merchant ships for approximately two years, touching at such ports as Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Guam, Ulithi and Australia. His travels next took him into India, Egypt, East Africa, South Africa, and France. He was discharged from service in 1945 with a certificate of honorable service and a reserve commission as a lieutenant (j. g.). Hobbies Listed Tye says his hobbies are golf, fishing and music. The latter he bears out by singing as baritone soloist in the choir of the Homestead First Presbyterian Church, and as a member of the men's chorus in Homestead. While his business is located in Coral Gables at 1905 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Frank makes his home in the Redlands section, south of here. As to his golf, Frank won a fountain pen in the Jaycee golf tournament last year. Active Jaycee He has been active in Junior Chamber of Commerce work both in North Carolina and in Coral Gables. He was a charter member of the Greensboro, N. C., club and was also a member on the Winston-Salem, N. C., club. He is a member of the board of directors of the Coral Gables club and served as general chairman of the Gay Nineties Ball committee last year. He is a member of the Country Club of Coral Gables and the Redlands District Lions Club, where he is a member of the construction committee and designed the irrigation system for the golf course. To date, he is still listed among the community's eligible bachelors. FRANK TYE One of a series on prominent members of the Coral Gables Junior Chamber of Commerce
