MEET THE JAYCEES Elcook Helped Build Planes Then Taught GI's to Fly

Helping design the tools for the manufacture of the Curtis Commando (C-46) and later teaching the students to fly the same plane is one of the interesting experiences of Sam L. Elcook, Jr., secretary of the Coral Gables Junior Chamber of Commerce. Back before the war, and before he had seen Coral Gables, Sam was a tool designer with the Universal Tool Company of Dayton, Ohio. Then came the war and Sam joined the Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant and was assigned as instrument flight instructor, teaching the flying of the same plane for which he had designed the tools before he entered the service. Came to Florida The war had quite an effect on the future of Elcook. It brought him to Homestead, allowed him to see Coral Gables and sold him on this community as THE place to live when the war clouds had passed. Also while in Homestead, he ran into a former high school classmate. Today, she is Mrs. Sam Elcook, known to most everybody in the Gables as "Jeane." The Elcooks operate the Gables Copy and Design Letter Service at 2515 Ponce de Leon Boulevard and reside at 632 Avenue Navarre. They have been Gables residents for three and one-half years, and find the growing community an ideal one for the letter service which they organized. Sam is 27, and was born in Dayton in 1920. He attended Steele High school in Dayton, the University of Dayton and the University of Miami. He is a member of the American Legion, Country Club of Coral Gables and the Loyal Order of Moose. He particularly likes the Gables because the climate is conducive to his hobbies-sports, fishing, golf and swimming.

Custodians Bid Farewell as Motheaten Moose Burns

This group of former custodians of the Mysterious Motheaten Moose of Coral Gables watch while the ugly talisman is burned "at the stake" in ceremonies conducted Sunday afternoon. The moose had been passed from resident to resident during a 12-month cycle, in which the creature was delivered to 49 homes in a fantastic "chain letter" gag.

Mayor of Holguin, Cuba To Present Flag to City

Friendly relations between the cities of Coral Gables and Holguin, Cuba, will be cemented at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning, when Dr. Eduardo Ochoe, mayor of the Cuban municipality, presents a Holguin flag to Mayor W. Keith Phillips. The ceremony, which will also be attended by Cuban "Queen" Ritaliy Aguero, will take place on city hall steps. Asked whether a Coral Gables flag will be presented in return to Dr. Ochoa, City Manager William T. McIlwain stated that such an exchange is planned, but the presentation will probably be made by Mayor Phillips on a visit to Cuba.

CITES CAUSES FOR UNREST 'GI Restlessness' Is Not 'Psychopathic' Dr. Marvin Flannery Tells Kiwanians

The difference between "GI restlessness" and "psychopathic personality" was explained to members of the Coral Gables Kiwanis Club on Tuesday by Dr. Marvin Flannery, speaking at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Dr. Flannery served in Coral Gables during the war as chief of surgery at the A.A.F. Regional Hospital (now Pratt Veteran's) and recently returned here with Mrs. Flannery to become permanent residents. Born Psychopathic He explained that persons with a psychopathic personality are born with it, and react inappropriately to the three basic emotions of fear, anger and love. On the other hand the GI who is accused of being restless is a normal individual who is "restless for cause." He stated that it is the psychopathic personality who gives the "stigma to all veterans who seem restless." "The restless GI needs more understanding and little more time," Dr. Flannery explained, "while the psychopathic personality needs actual and lengthy treatment in a mental institution." Cites Examples He cited as one of several examples a case of a member of an air crew of nine men. Before the war the youth was a member of a family where the father was busy making money and playing golf while the mother occupied most of her time in club activities. As a result the youth was denied the feeling of deep family love. As a member of an air crew that lived together, fought together and grew extremely close to each other, he actually experienced more "love" and "security" with his plane comrades than he ever felt at home. Father Busy He returned to find his father just as busy, his mother just as occupied with her clubs, and so they said he was "restless," the doctor explained, adding that he was restless for a cause. He said men who have served in important posts in the army often become restless when they return to civilian life and an old job that had a much lower level of responsibility and salary. Restless Himself He stated that he became restless when he returned to his native Chicago, because when in Coral Gables he had discovered that there are places in the country where people live much more gracefully, amid more pleasant surroundings. As a result of his "restlessness" he returned to the Gables to become a permanent resident. Dr. Flannery said the communities that were closer to the war had a better understanding of the returning veteran and pointed out that this area, with ship sinkings off the coast, a huge influx of servicemen, and with wounded being rushed by air directly from the battlefield to the Biltmore, was probably closer to the war than any other part of the United States. Jack Harding was in charge of the program.

New Plantings Are Announced At Fairchild

Although thousands of exotic tropical plants are at present established in a beautifully landscaped setting covering approximately 83 acres, plant introduction work continues at a steady pace at the Fairchild Tropical Garden in Coral Gables. During the past month alone seed of over sixty species of tropical palms, trees, shrubs and vines were received and planted in the new greenhouse of the Garden located immediately south of Matheson Hammock Park on Cutler Road. Foreign Shipments These seeds represent shipments received from such varied tropical locations as Mauritius, New Zealand, Java, Colombia, Malaya and Puerto Rico. Among the many interesting plants represented in this group of recent seed arrivals might be mentioned the Asparagus Bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus) which produces square beans in winged square pods. Mature beans of this tropical legume have a higher protein and fat content than any known variety of soybean. Another interesting plant immigrant received is the Miraculous Fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) a native of Africa whose brilliant red fruits upon being eaten affect one's taste buds in such a maner as to make most everything eaten taste sweet. This taste affect lasts for several hours after eating one or two of these small fruits.

Macfarlan, commanding officer, 1st Battalion 211th Infantry, Florida National Guard, that the first of two Guard units recently alloted to the University of Miami will be activated on September 10, 1947. No date has been set for the activation of the second unit which will be an Infantry Heavy Weapons Company but tentative plans call for nctivation approximately thirty days later. After a conference with Dr. Jay F. W. Pearson, vice president of the University, and Dr. Charles D. Tharp, Dean of Administration, Col. Macfarlan said that Capt. Aubrey L. Marsh of his battalion staff had been named to organize and command the new unit which has been designated Company B, 211th Infantry. Capt. Leadership in the air: bulwark of world peace

The Air Forces' new XB-45, one of the first four-engine jet bombers. With the observance of Air Force Day - August 1, 1947 - America reaffirms its belief in Air Power as Peace Power. • Every thinking citizen must realize that as long as our nation is strong in the air, we have the surest guarantee of a peaceful world. But aviation is a rapidly changing science. The air supremacy that was ours at the end of World War II can be lost overnight if we do not strive constantly to build more efficient aircraft-to develop new power sources-to explore the weather and the stratosphere-to train and equip flight and ground crews. • Your Air Forces today are doing these things well. And they are planning ahead. Your understanding of their problems and your loyal support will help them maintain the leadership so vital to the peace of the world. AIR POWER IS PEACE POWER AIR FORCE DAY AUGUST 1, 1947 KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE SKY! THIS MESSAGE OF NATIONAL IMPORTANCE IS PUBLISHED BY: LOWRY ELECTRIC CO. 114 Coral Way • Phone 48-6576
