Chase Officer Uses Pistol To Halt Negro

It took a three block chase and two shots for Officer Bob Ingersoll to serve a warrant on Nathaniel Jones late Sunday night. Jones, a negro of 3658 Grand Avenue, had been charged with criminal assault by Sadie Mae Allen, negro. The complainant was riding in the squad car with Officers Tipton and Ingersoll when they spotted Jones on the 3600 block on Thomas Avenue. Getting out of the car, Ingersoll approached Jones to serve the warrant. Suddenly, the negro turned and started running through the vacant lots and between the houses. Giving chase, Officer Ingersoll fired two shots, aiming low. Just as he fired, Jones stumbled on the uneven ground and one of the bullets hit him in the left shoulder. Getting to his feet, Jones continued to run for another block before he was finally caught. The wound, which was merely superficial, was treated by Dr. F. P. Poppe of 29 Avenue Santillane. Jones was booked at the police station on disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, charges.

Summer Sports Popular at Youth Center

Softball, swimming, and boxing have proved to be the most popular summer sports at the Youth Center according to Ed Beckman. Since Ed's return, the sports program has been greatly accelerated. Two boxing classes are in session now. One at two in the afternoon, and one at eight in the evening for those who are busy during the day. At the Venetian Pool, the swimming class has been divided into "swimmers" and "non-swimmers." Under Ed's watchful eye the "non-swimmers" are coming along nicely. "We hope to have every one of them swimming by the time school starts," he said. The Youth Center radio show this week will feature the awarding of more athletic medals. Sally Leighton and Judy Hutchison, the first two girls to complete the physical fitness tests, will be awarded medals for this accomplishment. Bill Parker will be awarded a boxing medal for engaging in five fights for the center. A California coast redwood, 364 feet tall, is the tallest living tree.

COMMISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE NATHAN MAYO Will Not Retire! Will Be a Candidate in 1948 Election

MR. MAYO'S Statement... Reports have come to me from various parts of the State that I will retire at the expiration of my present term. The rumors are absolutely without foundation as I expect to be a candidate to succeed myself in the 1948 election regardless of who else runs. My health was never better in my life. I have an unfinished program in the ultimate development of Agriculture that cannot possibly be completed in the next eighteen months. Therefore, I am asking my thousands of friends throughout the State to pass the word on to their neighbors that I am not ready to quit the Post of Commissioner of Agriculture, a work that I have had my heart in for years, and I promise to be just as active for a better future for Florida and Agriculture as I have tried to be in the past. I have tried to do a good job, which has been made possible by the cooperation of all the fine people of our wonderful State and I will continue to do so. NATHAN MAYO. (Paid Political Adv.)
