BOARD OK'S FIRST DRAFT OF ORDINANCE

Coral Gables' much postponed ordinance governing signs in the business district appeared destined for final enactment next Tuesday following passage on first reading at this week's special commission meeting. The ordinance will require approval of all proposed signs by the board of supervising architects, and requires submission of scale drawings or photographs of the plans for the sign. Must Be in Proportion Letters for wall signs or any sign visible from the exterior of the building that is on the walls, plate glass or other materials must be in proportion to the existing space. Illuminated signs and strip tubing are required to have the source of light concealed except in the case of signs on a parapet wall incorporated into the architectural design of the building. Provisions Listed Other provisions of the ordinance include: No exposed tubing shall be permitted in front of or upon any sign painted upon any surface except free standing exposed tubing which shall not exceed 150 square inches in sign area. All signs attached to a building shall be fastened directly to the walls by well secured metal anchors; wooden signs shall not have electric lights or electric fixtures attached to them in any manner. Must Not Obstruct No signs shall be so constructed as to obstruct any door, window or fire escape on any structure. No sign or signs shall be permitted on any new awnings or canvas canopy or canvas margins or valences of awnings; such signs as now exist on awnings or canopies shall not be repainted thereon, but shall be painted out at the time the awning may be repainted. Before the installation, erection or painting of any sign shall be commenced, a permit therefor shall first be obtained from the Building Inspector. Each application for such installation, erection or painting shall be accompanied by the written consent of the owner of the property. This section shall apply to all signs hereafter erected, whether same be placed upon new or existing buildings.

Embry Riddle Moves Offices From Coliseum

The Embry-Riddle Company this week announced the return of its executive offices to the Aviation Building, 3240 N. W. 27th Avenue in Miami from the Coral Gables Coliseum. Forced to vacate the property in July 1944 when the U. S. Navy took it over for use as an air gunnery school, the aviation company moved its administration personnel and Technical School to the Coliseum at 1500 Douglas road. Tract Purchased Immediately upon release by the Navy in May 1946, Embry-Riddle exercised its option taken five years previously and purchased the 20-acre tract with its sprawling eight story structure and eleven additional buildings. Office space subsequently was leased to air lines, aviation and other industries. Only recently the first floor in the south wing of the main building was remodeled for the occupancy today of Embry-Riddle executives, their staff, and personnel of the accounting and pay roll departments. Offices Completed Offices have been completed for John G. McKay, president of the company; Ernest J. Smith, vice president in charge of operations; J. W. Liversedge, vice president and comptroller; H. B. McKay, assistant vice president; John G. McKay Jr., legal advisor; Rodney W. Vestal, chief accountant; and Mrs. Ann Baldwin Landry, cashier. This removal from the Coliseum has permitted the long sought expansion of the Embry-Riddle Technical School in allowing more space for larger offices and additional class rooms. Hugh Copeland, director, and L. D. Carlton, registrar, now occupy the former executive offices.
