Gables Presbyterian

In the development and growth of the Gables Presbyterian Church, the women of the congregation have organized themselves in a Christian Fellowship Group, with Mrs. Leonard Bostwick, chairman, and Miss Alma Montgomery, secretary-treasurer. This group will later organize on the Denominational plan of woman's work, that of the woman's auxiliary. Dr. Larson announced as his sermon topic for the 11 a. m. church service next Sunday, in the Merrick Demonstration school auditorium, 39 Zamora Avenue, as "The Way, the Knowledge, and the Joy of Salvation." He will say in part "Christ presents Himself as the Way. He so offers Himself -'I am the way.' Christ came into the world to save men from their sin. The believer by faith accepts Jesus Christ as his Saviour. Christ is the Key of Salvation. The word of a person of integrity gives assurance. The word of a competent person answers the question. Such a given word is the basis of knowledge and gives assurance. In the Holy Scriptures God gives His Word that those who believe in and trust themselves to Jesus Christ for salvation are saved. The knowledge of our salvation rests upon the Word of God. We are assured of our salvation by the scriptures. We are saved in Christ, assured by the Word of God, both of which are securely established, unchanging and unshakeable, hence our salvation and assurance or knowl-edge are certain. But the joy of salvation rests on our conduct which is subject to change by our disobedience. Hence the joy of salvation is fleeting, The joy of salvation is in direct relation as our obedience. Hence we pray 'reapoee unto me the joy of salvation' and as we pray repent of our sin and seek to live in new obedience." Dr. Larson stated that opportunity would be given at the Sunday service for any desiring to unite with the church.

Christian Science

First Church of Christ, Scientist in Coral Gables is opposite City Hall Park. Morning service 11 a. m.; evening service, 8 p. m.; Sunday school, 11 a. m. "Love" is the subject of the lesson-sermon which will be read in Church of Christ, Scientist, throughout the world on Sunday, August 3. The Golden Text is "Let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise loving kindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth" (Jerimiah 9:24). Among the citations which comprise the lesson-sermon is the following from the Bible: "I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God. ... They shall they know that I the Lord their God am with them, and that they, even the house of Israel, are my people, saith the Lord God (Ezekiel 34:15-30). The lesson-sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "Not materially but spiritually we know Him as divine Mind, as Life, Truth, and Love. We shall obey and adore in proportion as we apprehend the divine nature and love Him understandingly, warring no more over His corporeality, but rejoicing in the affluence of our God" (140:7-12).

C. of C. Enters 'Trade Winds' In National Competition

The "Trade Winds," monthly bulletin of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, has been entered in a national contest for chamber of commerce publications, Mrs. Mary T. Moore announced this week. Started a year ago last June by Mrs. Moore, executive secretary of the organization, the "Trade Winds" brings news of Gables' business doings each month to the 600 members of the C. of C. Mrs. Moore has been asked to select the three issues which she considers the best for 1947 and turn them in to be judged. NACOS Sponsored The contest is being sponsored by the National Association of Commercial Organization Secretaries which is a trade organization for C. of C. executives. Each publication will be placed in two groups; the first group will be judged on the basis of population, and the second will be an open group for all publications. Deadline for the contest is August 1, winners will be named at the NACOS convention at Colorado Springs Oct. 12-15. Awards of Value Prizes for the winning papers are as yet unannounced, but according to the NACOS, "the awards will have real significance and value throughout the chamber of commerce field." In the line of national publicity, the Chamber of Commerce was asked to furnish pictures and editorial material to the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad for their "Pinehurst" entitled "Tropical Trips," and to the Continental Oil Company for their travel guide "ConocoTouraid." In addition, the Seaboard Airline Railroad has asked for a selection of local photographs for possible use in a mural in their New York headquarters. Only one member of the present Florida cabinet is a native Floridian. He is State School Superintendent Colin English who hails from Alva, in Lee County.

John Haines, ATF Salesman Succumbs

John W. Haines, 58, Florida representative of the American Type Founders Sales Corporation, died in Miami on July 25 after a short illness. Although engaged in extensive traveling, Haines was a Miamian at the time of his death, having established his home in Miami several years ago. He was well known and respected by every printer and newspaper publisher in the state. He was deeply attached to the printing industry. In his 28 years with ATF he assisted, probably more than any other one person, the rapid growth and expansion of the printing and publishing industry in Florida. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bessie Johnson of Miami, two brothers, Bernard A. Haines of Hatfield, Pa., and Morton H. Haines of Miami. Funeral services were conducted from Bess Funeral Home, at 4 p.m. Monday. Internment took place at Woodlawn Park Cemetery.
