Ceramics Industry Cited As Possibility In Florida
Possibility for an extensive ceramics industry lies within Florida, the research and industrial division of the Florida State Chamber of Commerce stressed yesterday in a business review dealing with industrial opportunity in the state. "The availability of deposits of clays in Florida stimulated the early production of simple clay items for local consumption. Such products as jugs, crocks, simple household utensils and heavy hotel crockery have been manufactured at intervals in Florida in the past but a combination of circumstances, particularly matters relative to distribution and, more recently, war conditions, virtually stopped the industry until approximately two years ago. Today art pottery and containers for honey, marmalades and jellies are being manufactured by several new firms. Short-Sighted "Floridians are guilty of an almost unbelievable short-sightedness in the failure to develop a ceramics industry in the state. This is true not only of the pottery products from ordinary clays but of fine china as well. "Kaolin is the most important of the Florida pottery clays. The Florida kaolin is superior to any known deposits in North America, having a peculiarly high degree of plasticity. This quality is not normally found in kaolin and has given the Florida clay an international reputation. "Since 1892 Florida kaolin has been mined in large commercial quantities in Putnam and Lake Counties. (Additional deposits occur in the central peninsula and in West Florida.) Peculiarly, all of Florida's kaolin is shipped North for use in the manufacture of china, pottery, tile and paper." The State Chamber's researchers emphasized that "Florida and Southeastern markets can well support a fine ceramics industry in the State."
Florida Pays More Taxes To Government
Floridians paid $413,659,317 in federal taxes during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1947, an increase of 4.8 per cent over the previous fiscal year as compared with a decrease of 4 per cent for the nation as a whole, the research and industrial division of the Florida State Chamber of Commerce stated yesterday in its weekly business review. "Expressed in terms of Florida products, this federal tax bill paid by Floridians was 12 millions of dollars more than the total value of all fruits, vegetables, field crops and livestock sold in the state, and practically equal to the estimated value of all products manufactured in Florida last year. "By principal classifications of taxes, Floridians paid last year $261,061,652 in individual income taxes, $49,667,628 in corporation taxes, $22,754,172 in excess profits, $17,621,285 in employment taxes (including tax on carriers) and $62,554,580 in all other federal taxes."
Court Ruling May Be Asked By Brinson
(Continued from page one) son was not satisfied with his ruling and the subsequent commission denial of the license, that he ask a circuit court ruling on the decision. The commission also approved a recommendation of the zoning board that Stone's Liquor Store be permitted to move from the old post office building to a new building to be erected in the 300 block of Avenue Aragon next to the Riviera-Times building. Rowe To Move Clark Rowe was given permission to move his package store from 4005 Aurora Street around the corner to 222 Bird Road. No action was taken on a suggestion to make package store licenses non-transferable when it was pointed out that such action would place an undue burden on a store operator who had spent considerable money in building up a business and was then forced to sell it because of circumstances beyond his control. The commission already has the power to approve or reject any such transfers after background investigations of the applicants.
The average school term in Florida is 176 days.
