Gables Presbyterian
Dr. Larson, pastor of the Gables Presbyterian Church, located in the Merrick Demonstration school, 39 Avenue Zamora, announces as his sermon topic for the 11 a. m. church service on next Sunday as "Who Is A Christian?" He will say in part, "Many answers are supplied who are the Christians by listing a number of things they do not do. This negative approach is not in the answer. It neither defines or describes a Christian person. From the standpoint of definition one may say that "a Christian is a person who repents of his sin by faith in Jesus Christ, trusting himself to Him as Savior for salvation and life. But many are interested in an answer that describes the Christian. We seek a positive, not a negative description. Christians are those within whom Christ is at reality—by living that Christ through them expresses Himself in the world today. In their lives He has the supremacy in all things: A servant of Christ long ago put it, 'It is no longer I that live, but Christ that liveth in me!' and again, 'I can do all things through Christ that strengtheneth me!' Such persons so completely devoted to God in Christ, become not only powerfully positive in their influence for the cause of Christ and the work of the church, but are living examples of what God is and means to life that is conditioned as their lives are. They become a demonstration plot in a world of temptation and sin, by which the world is convinced of the profound reality of the Christian faith, and the true meaning of what a Christian is."

"Spirit" is the subject of the lesson-sermon which will be read in Churches of Christ, Scientist, throughout the world on Sunday, August 10. The Golden Text is "Teach me to do thy will; for thou are my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness" (Psalms 143:10). Among the citations which comprise the lesson-sermon is the following from the Bible: "Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue" (II Peter 1:2-3). The lesson-sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy; "The calm, strong currents of true spirituality, the manifestations of which are health, purity, and self-immolation, must deepen human experience, until the beliefs of material existence are seen to be a bald imposition, and sin, disease, and death give everlasting place to the scientific demonstration of divine Spirit and to God's spiritual, perfect man" (99:23).

Dream of Central Miami Is Now Actuality
(Continued from page 3) having gladioli blooming in her yard! For the community records we'd like to note that the members of the medical profession have also proven themselves first-class at digging, weeding, planting, and hauling gravel. Dr. George Schmitt has been voted the best at pushing a wheel-barrow, while his young three-year-old son, Tipper, has proven indispensable to the neighborhood by his willingness to water plants for the grand sum of two cookies. Zinnia Trouble The Fred Diestelhorsts are having zinnia trouble—they planted them very casually and they're growing so rapidly they're getting out of control. Fred is also the owner of an Army Surplus truck, which our "Mayor" has been known to commandeer on occasion for community purposes! The Harry Townsons lived in their house for almost a month without electricity—and he works for the Florida Power & Light! The Tuckermans, who just recently came into the fold, waited for several months for their house because they could not get any electricity—and in the meantime "Nook" was technical adviser on lighting for the Country Club Theater! Sam Porter, who works at the Florida National Bank, is the neighborhood consultant on the intricacies of pouring cement and at the present time is busily engaged in building a utility room at the rear of his house. Familiar Faces Walking around the block to look over the progress being made by our neighbors in the business of growing and planting and getting settled, we find that many other familiar faces have joined us—there are the Harold Finchers, the Bill McKittericks and Mr. Brick (both of whom are connected with the Gables First National Bank), the Van Ripers, the Paul Greenaways (he's Adjutant of the Gables Legion), the Hal Deckles, who are still under the spell of having a new baby in the household, and Betty Borin, who is so well known to Miami music lovers. Was Army Nurse Across the way live the Frank Buchanans and we found out that Mrs. B. was an Army Nurse during the recent war and due to a promotion to the rank of Captain, now outranks her hubby! Last but by no means least, we find the Lawrences — Mr. Lawrence owns the Lawrence Electric Shop in the Gables, while his young son, we discover, has the honor of being the first newspaper carrier to be employed by the Riviera-Times!—and he assures us that all of our neighbors are subscribers!
Florida school buses transported 112,780 children to school last year.
